E1EUBER HUB DM. Convlcb For Public Road Service In Forsythe County. ' Prisoners For Pen. State Normal School. Christian Scientists Not Alarmed. ' Monday's Night Storm. Child Labor BUI. Rixetoh, Peb. SO.-Bepresentatlve Freeman of Henderson county today re ceived a telegram stating that his brother A.B. Freeman of Henderson vllle is at the point of death. A. B. Freeman.is the Republican member of the State elieo tion board and Is well known. The sheriff of Buncombe county to day brought two negro prisoners to the penitentiary; man for burglary to serve seven years, and a woman to serve ten for taking her daughter's Infant child and throwing It Into the woods. Three convicts arrived at the penitentiary from Bertie county; all negro men, to serve 15 year sentences for murder in the second degree. At Roxobel last April they killed a young man and for the crime wore convicted of murder in tho first degree. They appealed and secured a new trial at which they pleaded" guilty of murder In the second degree. . . Chairman Doughion of the House branch of the finance committee which Is now considering the "Maohinery Act" lays he quite confident that the section SO, regarding railways will stand just as it is. This Is the section which tbe rail ways are fighting, being the one which gives tbe corporation commission no discretion la arriving at the value of franchises, etc. Senator Hoey says that there are 28 Senators for tbe London bill, ' some of these having been opposed to It until an agreement was made after a conference to strike out section 6 which regards the atter of petition for license. The Christian Scientists have an Idea that while the bill to shut them out from North Carolina as "practitioners" was today unanimously given a favorable committee report, tbey can lu one way or another defeat the bill or prevent action. .A member of the committee on public health says tbey are greatly mis taken and that the Mil Is certain to be ne a law, and that publlo sentiment Is rery solidly supporting It. News of the destruction by Monday night's storm In Northeastern North Carolina comes in slowly, but It seems from what has been received that the damage to property and the Injury to parsons Is far greater than was at first supposed. Country houses suffered worst Much damage was done In Chd wan as well as In Bertie and other coun ties there." The compromise bill regarding" the labor of children In factories appears to give much satisfaction. It Is regarded as a step forward. la the course of an Interview with President Met rer of the State Normal and. Industrial College at Greensboro he said that he was only asking the legisla ture for 188,000 special appropriation tor a dormitory. . It Is the desire to have a dormitory -with 100 room to accommo date M0 students. 80 students now board and room outside Of the odllege - and for the past six or seven yesrs at least S00 a year; he v been turned away for lack of room.
