Public School Appropriation. Aets

Trial.
.5 RALXien, March . 10. The Bupreme
Court today took up the appeals from
the 6th District Only a few attorneys
are here," among these being, . W 0 Mon
roe, Frank Daniels and Isaac FDortob
all of Goldsboro. .
,' The BUte Superintendent of Public
instruction says that as soon as the ap
plications .from counties for aid from
the 1100,000 appropriated to keep the
public schools open months in the
year can be scaled the warrants will be
issued. The applications amount to
1140,000.
. Everyone is delighted, with the new
system of typewriting the acts of the
legislature, the work being beautifully
done, and. a great saving effected. Be
sides this, a copy Is furnished In carbon
which Is prepared by a lawyer and then
goes to the public printer, while the
original Is bound, to be filed.
There was surprise that the number of
acts of this Legislature should hsve ex
ceeded that of tiro years sgo, but it Is so
for the number Is 13S0, or 23 more than
In 1901. As to the coat of enrolling the
acts the saving Is very great, amounting
to $1,W5. Yesterday 340 bills and 12
resolutions were ratified, this being a
great day's work. 20 young lady type
writers worked all day Sunday In order
to get the acts ready for ratification yes
terday.
Three convicts ariived at the peniten
tiary today from Bladen and Edgecombe
The number received this year has been
very small.
The number of distillery towns Incor
porated, ro far. as known today IS B;
Cokely, Myrtle, and Old Sparter in the
east, and Shore and William In the
west.
The Christian Scientists people 'who
Lung on here for more than a month
fighting the bill designed to put them
out of action In North Carolina have
gone home. Their fight cont them a
pretty penny, for lawyers, board, etc.,1
but they stuck to It and never left the
galleries of the Senate and House until
the gavel fell and the legislature ad
journed sine die. -
Mention has been made of the fact
that the House of Representatives was
heavily loaded with employees. It turns
out that It had 20 clerks, 19 pages, 2
door-keepers, and 21 laborers. This
broke the record. Of course a lot of
these people had been promised political
jobs and places had to be made for
them.
One of the attorneys for the defence
in the Haywood murder trial when
asked today whether there would be any
postponement of the trial said he did
not know; that there had been no meet
ing of counsel since their first meeting
together. He added that Ernest Hay
wood the defendent was ihe coolest msn
In the crowd; oooler than any of his
counsel.
