A well known millionaire, with a national reputation for conservatism, said in conversation the other day:- "If I were a young man anxious for Independence, I would invest my savings in a small piece of good real estate. When I had It paid for I would put the deed away and forget I had it. Then I would begin paying on another." Doubtless every man has felt at some time that he would like to be a land holder. That he would like to h ive a little piece of this earth of this great country that he could call his own. This is a worthy sentiment, but to seleot his piece of land in the heart of a pnpn'ous community where the mare pressure of population is thero to increase the value of his holding, perhaps many fold this is sentiment combined with business. It unquestionably strengthens a man's character to own property Increases his responsibility. If he can tie himself up, and is obliged to make regular payments he is sure to save. 1 he trouble is be allows the chance to pass. He is going to begin next month:' Rich men talk of the Importance of a man's first Thousand Dollars. Why not his first Hundred or his first Ten? Now York, April 1. The census re port was a surprise to the trade. After figures were Issued to a crop of 10,250, 000 bales In December, '.a yield of about 10,500,000 bales had been expected. Id place of this figures were 11,078,000. This started a general selling and prices broke rapidly. The figures Include round bales, and round bales are only half bales. The standard bales amounted lo some 10,800,000, according to the esti mate. We fall to see where the report Is bullish or bearish. The trade needs over eleven million bsles and, every one thinks tEe crop will prove about that figure. The Government report lu De cember, as you remombor, showed a crop of 10,600,000 bales, and the price broke S points, only to go up 3 cents later. The Influence of this report Is likely to be short lived. It will take col- ton to break the market We have said factors fsvor a gradual ly declining market, bat this means to short August on advances, not decline;, Oa a recovery of 15 or 80 points the best thing seems to be a sale again We think best to take in profits and wait until the May pool try to get prices upjsgsln before selling.
