On motion Board adjourned. Gko. B. Watbiib, ClkBdCoCom April 7th 1903. Repoit ot Grand Jury April Teim of Court: New Bern, Craven County, North Caro lina, April 10th, 1903. To Bis Honor, G. S. Ferguson, Judge presiding: We, The Grand Jury for this term, respectfully beg to submit to the Court the following report of the servi ces performed, by us. We have endeavor ed to faithfully follow Instructions. Our duties have been executed to the best of our knowledge and ability. Out of 57 bill indictmentB we find 88 true bills, 11 not true bills, 8 continued over tor Jack of fitnesses. We made 14 presentments. We'vlslted the county jill and Inspec ted building and yard, found premises clean and In order. We find 8 windows In south end of building entirely closed by solid Iron shutters, we would sdylst that those solid shutters be removed and in place of same use Iron grating so as to allow free circulation of air In . sum mer and sunlight In tho winter. The old wooden floor In building should be replaced by a now one as tho present one Is In a bad condition. We also find that a crack In division wall between main jail and outer rooms Is unsafe and should be repaired. We would suggest the addition of 4 new Iron cages as they are needed for the safe kecplnf of prison ers. In the office of Register of Deeds we found every thing In order. We would recommend that the register be allowed to have an old volume of Records, Book No. 6 transcribed, as It is very old and the paper Is rotten and discolored. A new copy would be the means of pre serving the records. We found the Clerk's office In order and well kept. We Inspected the office of Bherlff and found everything In order. Noose river bridge was examined and It wss found that 10 or 13 new planks are needed hfBoor of bridge, to replace those that are badly worn or rotten, one of ahtch Is so rotten as to be unsafe, the rest ot bridge Is In good condition. We found on Inspection of Trent river bridge that the south end ot draw gale Is not sate, as It cannot be locked. Found 30 rotten or badly worn planks In floor of bridge which we advise replacing with new ones. Railing In bad condi tion ia some places, the platform loading from bridge to keepers' house Is In a dangerous condition. ' The county Home wss visited and upon examination wss found to be in first-class condition, clean and well-kept the keeper doing all in ber power for the comfort of the inmates, all of whom say they aro well eared tot and well-fed. We find they are badly crowded, four and Ave persons occupying the same room, the diseased inmatea hava to occupy the same room with those In health. An 8 room building should bo provided at once to meet the needs of the Home-and to replace the 9 buildings recently de stroyed by fire, we would also suggest that a tores pomp and hoes be added for ase la case of firs.
