Not only is it nnparalelled in America but there are but few instances In the civilized world unless it Were In battle where so mang people were killed in so short a time. , , . The Iroquois theatre had only been opened fire weeks and was reputed to be the largest, finest and safest play house h the world. It was built by Klaw and Erlanger and adapted to the speculator plays for which that firm .is celebrated. It wu built after the famous opera Comfque In Paris and was a model of beauty and elegance., .Ihe play of Mr - Bluebeard was being produced on the stage at a matinee. An alarm of fire aroused the audience caused a panic and all that cool -heads could do to prevent the disaster proved unavailing. The crowd frenzied by the thought that the building vras being rapidly consumed surged through .the exits, crashing and jamming while those who were successful in getting through the orowd themselves were boateq back by others and" shajpi the fate of the people they had trod under their feet."' . . It is estimated that 700 people were killed. At midnight Wednesday, Cor oner, Traeger stated that the actual num ber of dead bodies taken front the ruins ofthe theatre up to that Urns was 637 and there were still unnumbered bodies In the building. It Is doubtful if every body will be recovered. The accident wu caused by an elcc- trio wire breaking and communicating to a gas tank which exploded. The fumes from the tank spread all through the house suffocating a great mmy peo ple. 1USCAR0RA. December 80th. The weather' keeps cold aod nearly all (the neighbors seem to have bad colds.
