Oapt Absalom Hyde, superintendent of
the BellsburyKational Cemetery, died
at 1 o'clock this morning ol pneumonia
afteronlrflwdaya'lllnea.- Capt Hyde
was a native of South Carolina and wu
68 years old. In 1858 ha enlisted In the
United States Army and served under
Gen'.' Joseph X Johnson, In the west,
prior to he olvil war. When hit State
seceded from the Union he applied for
an honorable discharge from the nimy
lntendlnc to loin the Confederate forces
as his brother, a civilian, shortly after
wards did. His application being re
fused,' In accordance with the policy of
the Wat Department, he remained with
the flag and served with credit through
out the civil war. At Gettysburg he
was shot twice through the body, nd
was left on the field (or dead. , At the
close of the war, having been promoted
to be captain In the Fourth United States
Cavalry he wu Invalided out of the ser
vice. He afterwards served as superin
tendent of six National cemeteries In
different parts of the country.; His last
charge before) coming here was at Mew
Bernwhert ho served nine years. A year
ago he was transferred to ballsbury to
succeed the lamented Capt WJ Elgin.
Owing to the ebon space of his resi
dence, Capt Hyde's acquaintanceship
was limited, but he was held In high re
gard by ill who knew him. Ho was a
widower and leaves seven children three
of whom continued to make their home
with him. The burial will take place
with Masonic honors, in the national
cemetery at 4 o'clock tomorrow after
noon. Ultimately remains will be remov
ed to Hew Bern where the wife of the
deceased Is buried.
