A Surprise Marriage A romantic and pretty weeddfng oc curred In St. Ihomas ProCathedral In Wilmington Thursday afternoon In wntcnur James U. Cowan andMus Katberlne Xllxabeth Mayo wers joined In marriage by, Bet. father Dennem. The affair was kept a profound secret until Mr and Mrs Cowan were well on their way to New York, not even the parents of the contracting parties know log of the affair. The announcement of the engagemdnt had recently beea make but the wedding was not expected to occur until September. Mr Cowsn who was obliged to go to New York oa tome theatrical business conceived the romantic Idea and the bride acquiesced to his wishes. The f ilands of Mr and , Mra Cowan, who srs legion were of course tken by surprise at this denouement bat their good wishes for the future happiness of the young eouple are none the lass sin cere. Mr Cowan Is one of the most popular young men In Wllmlnifto. Ha was formerly the eKy Sdltor of the Messen ger and In that poattloa he acquitted himself very ally. On March 18th, 1903, the Lower House of the legislature passed a license bill by a rote of 214 to 107. A few days later the bill passed the Senate by a rote of 8 to 1, and on March 27th, received Exe cutive approval and became the law of the 8tat The vote, both in the House and Senate, was significant Thecjtles of the State stood' overwhelmingly for llcenss, their rote In the Legislature be ing 121 to 8 in its favor. Stilt more noteworthy la the circumstance that the rural members, taken separately, voted for license in the proportion of 97 to 76. Representatives of both political partieB were also In a majority In favor of the act. Kev. Dr. Harwood, Trinity Church, New Haven, Conn, "I think the doctrine of prohibition Is atwar with all the ideas and teachings of the English-speaking race. We nev er can tolerate the Idea that because one man does not wsnt to use a certain thing no One else is to be allowed to use It provided, of course, that it Is not wrong ia itself. If you take the ground that the usa of anything containing alcohol Is sinful and criminal, then the doctrine of prohibition might be con sidered. But even the question might arise whether tha State could Interfere with the Individual conscience The. great majority of the good and wise men the world over, men whose char acters are respected, and whose opinions are likewise respected, do not consider the use ot alcohollo drink In Itself either alnful or criminal. There can be ao question about the side on which the wisdom and Intelligence of the world's greatest and bast men la enlisted in this matter. Bare aad there a wise man may be found who la In'faVor of prohl bltloa, but theteare tht exceptions and are very few. The conscience of the world goes against this doctrine.1' Bar. Da. 8. D.
