Chairman F D Jones of the republican congressional executive committee for this, the fourth district was here today n hopes of getting the committee to gether and naming a candidate for con gress to oppose Ed W Pou Democratic congressman, but other members did not show up. Jones says he hopes to have a candidate named within two weeks, Both St. Mary's School and Peaoe nstltute opened today with the largest attendance In their history. Every room In both Institutions is taken and several applications have been refused by both for lack of room. Parties who arrived here from Mt Olive, since the cyclone yesterday tell of some remarkable freaks of the wind in one instance a dwelling house was blown down and four small children were carried by the wind Into the yard unhurt. At another house a Mrs Cox was sitting In a chair ia front of her honse when the force of the wind smash ed the chair, jammed the woman Ins corner and overturned the house, pin nlng ths woman down so that It required hard work by three neighbors to extrl catcher. However she was unhann ed. Senator Simmons has received a tele gram from Senator Aldrlch of Rhode Island notifying him that he cannot meet Mm in Beaufort, nntll Sept 25th They were to have met there -today for the purpose of conferring as to the possibilities for deepening the bar by government appropriation. Armlstead Jones, for the put several years chairman of tbe Wake oonnty Democratic executive committee nounces that he will not stand tor re election and ho will be succeeded by W B Snow who led the victorious ftrht in Bating a tremendous stock on nana ana in order to make room for our Fall' Stock wo wW offer for wise" but that Is only the argument of the lowest class ofhumanlty whose only object la life Is the gratification of their appetites and pleasures. Ignorance la not bliss to the person who is desirous of making himself of any UBe. JIlss Dewey then rendered a vocal solo In a very pleasing way. Rev Q T Adorns then made a few remrks bear ing on the idea of how education assists the moral and religions part of society; if a man is educated he will became bet ter acquainted with the responsibilities placed Upon him and will strive to do his part toward the uplifting of humanl- ly. He gave the students some good advice about educating their heart as well as their head and to make It a habit to attend regularly tho church of their choice. Prof Kemp, the soliciting agent of the school spoke of the chances the edu cited young woman had over the one who had no learning. It has come .to be a custom now to seek the best eduoa tlon rather than avoid It. A boy or a girl knows that an education Is the one thing that will give them a standing and popularity among their friends. He said he had been highly pleased with the way that this Institution had gained In Strength and nan bars and that through the untiring efforts of Col Ho'.laday the school had attained Its onvlable rep utation. Mr 8 M Brlnson made the concluding address In which hs told of the struggles of educational Institutions af ter the war. He also spoke of tbe high standing the school had already taken congratulated the president on the sue cess of the school. The exercises con' eluded with a very pretty solo by Miss Saddler which was heartily applauded The attendance at the sohool at the opening of the surpssaes the president's fondest hopes and presents the advisa bility and even the neoeaalty of erecting another building for the accommoda tion of the students. A great many haveoome by train and by team and all the rooms In the barracks and dormi tory are now ocoupled. The attendance Including the students who live and board in the city will num her 350. CUTICURA REMEDIES. A Remarkable Testimonial from a Most Intelligent and Trustworthy Lady. A tumor came on my neck and In a day or two it was ss large as half ea orange. I was very much alarmed for fear it was malignant. My friends tried to persuade me to consult my physician j but dreading that he would Insist on using the knife, I would not consent to go. Instead, I got Cutlcnra Resolvent and Cutlcnra Ointment. I took the former according to direc tions, and spread a thick layer of the Ointment on the swelling. On renew ing It I would batne my neck in very warm water and Cutlcnra Soap. In a few days the Cntlcura Ointment had drawn the swelling to a head, when It broke. Every morning it was opened with a large sterilised needle, squeezed and bathed, and fresh Ointment put on. Pas and blood, and a yellow. cheesy, tumorous matter came out. In about three or four weeks' time this treatment 'completely eliminated the tumor. The soreness tnat naa ex tended down into my chest wss all gone, and my neck now seems to be perfectly well. " adoui nve or six yean ago my ter had a similar experience, used the Cutlcnra Remedies with magical effect. For the second time within a few weaks the passengers on aa excursion train between Wilmington and New Bern have been made victims of dastardly affair by which the oars Were assailed from the outside. The last time It was with bullets and it seemed to be only a merciful dispensation cf prov Idenoo that somebody was not struck an killed. The train was near Folkstone on Its return to New Bern Wednesday night and tbe reports from several guns were heard followed by the crashing of glass The passengers, especially the women were greatly frightened because the; remembered the unpleasant experience of the excursion preceding that one and that It happened at or near this place In fact it was recalled that trains have been stoned several times at this place and the consequently felt a little fearful about passing there la the night Fortunately none of the flying missiles struck but It was no thanks to any of those who fired the shots who evidently Intended to do great mischief. It is be lieved that six or seven shots were fired. Only one psne cf glass was broken sad no trace of tbe bullets could be found. No manner of blame can bs attached to the railroad company for a casualty of this kind and yet If anything should occur It Is quite likely that the victim or friends of the vlotlm wonld sue the company and therefore It should behoove them to use their utmost pains to bring the rascals to justice. They have been fortunate enough to capture and ooaviot one stone thrower and It is severely to be hoped that the creatures who wonld dare to use a gun la sueh a cowardly way will get his just desert.
