O-flclal Paper or New Bern nod Craven Cosntj NEW BERN, N. O., September 18, 1901 . ij. INDIVIDUAL SELFISHNESS A DRAG TO COMMUNITY PROGRESS. ' There I a disposition with some New Bernlans, to make their Individual (fains paramount to every other consideration, that It, In every trade or commercial transaction, to secure every benefit aris ing to themselves, regardless of their neighbor or the community at large. It is a spirit utterly at variance with every community of Interest feeling, and n moBt extravagant carrying out of "charity begins at home."for there is no charity In it, only personal selfishness, and the attempt so always secure the biggest end of every trade, and nothing going to benefit others. The prevalence of this spirit of indi vidual selfishness must cease, if New Bern is to grow.. It must end, or the very greed of those seeking all personal benefits for their eel ves will over reach, fail in itself and bring ruin to all. As noted In these columns some days ago, the Increase in New Bern's popnlal tlon of 46 per cent In the last four yearj, Indicates, the possibilities or- growth whloh this city can attain, but even with such a splendid growth, there is no need of those who are in position to do so, to hamper those seeking residence here by offering obstacles or hindran ces to discourage or drive them away. The lease of the Atlantic and North Carolina railroad, is a case in point, for the conditions governing the manage ments! this property are very different from those of the past fifty years. The lessee of the road facet the con dition of having to make this property pay for Itself, and as a good business man, his energies will "be directed tow ards this end. It Is a business proposition with th oltliens of New Bern paitioularly thou owning psoperty, and those engaged li trade, that this railroad shall prove o; value to them. In a business way. Thi being true, there is a need of those wh can, or whose interests or property al feet the affair of the A & N C propert and Its workings, to see to it tbtt ever coLcesslon possible shall be made. In liberal way, so that this olty shall secur the benefits that must come throng) the development of this section byth new management of the A & N C. ,i, .. A part of the general offices of th company are to be mWod to Ooldiboro as the management says temporarily It Is up to New Bernlans that this b only temporarily, and not permanent or; that further change may not1 made, which shall'moan lots to this con muntty. This is a matter not only effecting the laborer, and the employs ;of tin railroad, but It Is on affecting every property owntr.and; commercial inter eat of New Bern, It I Hat for the ell iaeni to throwjaeld their dser for In dividual benenu and jaeeklsj unity to both benefit each Individual and protect every Interest of their city.
