' Tie Bepabllcaas oMhe Third North Carolina Congressional District, flatter- ed themselTcs In ths nomination ofEi Judge W B O'B Robinson, that they had made a hit. They did, but It was for greater Minred victory for Charles B Thomas, the Democratic nominee. It Is not that there ! anything against the personal character of Judge Robin son, for no sturdier Irishman lives In the Third, and the good red Irish blood of the Judge, with his disposition to 'talk oat," regardless of men and thing makes him a good companion, and at a Judge on the bench, he was as positive in his speech, as he would he among friends. And It Is this very open, out ipoken characteristic of Judge Robinson, which makes his candidacy apolitical anoma ly, for the Judge ha a political record of utterances which however bold and juitlflable as coming from a private cltl sen, cannot pass political scrutiny, and make him the truly acceptable candidate from a Republican party view, On the temperance question, the Judge has already publloly expressed hi opinion, and It Is decidedly anti North Carolina Republican. A a possible eongres tman, he would b at outs with the Roosevelt adminis tration, for the recent episode In Wash ington City, I too well remembered to need repetition. From a DUtrlot point of view, It 1 to be questioned If the Judge i regarded at a eat party man, one who will remain silent at the right time, which ts praetloally all the time, and will not talk out a he think, regardleu of who he bit. There I no doubt but Judge Robin son makes good talks, and very Inter esting hits, but these count for nothing tn hit favor In votes getting In thlt DU trlot for there U nothing politically sub stantlal behind It all from a party point of view which demand a itrlct adherence to party tenent. with no choice of aoceptanoe of a part and the rejection of the rest. 'As an Independent candidate, Judge Robinson would prove an Ideal cam paigner, for ha could then talk without fear or favor, a most natural position for one of his tempennent to take. As it U, at a Republican hU candidacy Is a most anomalous one, and no one real ists this fact belt than the genial Irishman from Wayne, Hews la a NntsbelL Dead Man's Bend a place near Kansas City, Mo, was the sosae of a terrible disaster to whlok twenty-fire twople were kllW la a flbRlsloa between a pas- sea ger train and a freight. From the Van Wert (Ohio) Daily Time of September 29th. The Moving Picture Exhlblllon, lglven at the Auditorium last night by Lyman Howe Co.. we without doubt, tha finest exhibition of Its kind ever presented In Van Wert. Nothing of It kind was ever before seen In thlt city. Thote pre entarho expected to tee the tmall aad filckerlng picture, ahown by so-called movlnc cloture companies, were mott agreeably disappointed. Mr Howe's pictures are large, steady and fllckerless, and of a dUtlnotness which causes one to forgot that he Is not witnessing the actual reality. The sound accompany. log the aoenes are wonderful In their ef fect. The Lite Boat series alone are wall worth the price of admUsloa, while the trip through Italy and StLobls views are marveto of photography. There to not a dull moment during the evening. Those who see the Howe Pic ture tonight will have ts secure teat at aa early hour. The echool teachers of the city who attended the attraotlont last evening In a body were more than pleased. The Howe Moving Ploture will ex hlblt la the New Masoale Theatre Satar day alght October 15th. TOURS FOR A BRIGHT C0MP7 EX ION. .. Th instruments have been placed la the homes smd stores f most of the subtcrlbert and that work Is being fc pushed as rapidly as possible. W lire informed that the company will "cut over" this week thus bringing the new system Jn operation. The oentral energy v i, tern by which- It to known is a wonderful piece Of iec- trtcal mechanism.' It ii to called be cause all power Is located in the central office the old fashioned Instruments with departments have been done away and all electrical charging is done la the local exchange. Aneloborate arranges mentmay.be teen in the Company' office by which thlt is done. By meant of this new syatem It Irouly necetsary for the subscriber to take tha receiver, from the hook in order to ring up oentral. The (witch board though complicated to anyone not used to telephone ' appli ances and methole will doubtless be easily mastered by the operators. By the mechanism of the new switch board operators will be able to Jell where there Is any difficulty on any line by the improper working of the drop signal. The linemen will be able to make the repair quicker than by the old meth od. Subscribers will hsve some difficulty in getting connections when the new system Is Inaugurated at the operators have to learn the new switch board well before they can give satisfactory service but within two weeks they expect to hay it learned so that subscribers will have little or no trouble. The new switch board and electric mechanism wss purchased of the West ern Electrio Co of New York and Chi cago It was put In at an expense of $15,000 and Is the beat telophone syatem in the world. In addition to their other in. provement the company hat made their line all metallic a feature whtob everybody know by experience to be of immense advantage. The entire wcrk hat been tedious and expensive, but the public are going to profit by it in having a system thatione other can equal. We fully believe that this new system will thow what the local exchange hat had to contend with for all the yean that It hat been to exis tence. The people do not know alwayt what difficulties an exchange hss to suffer through no real fault of Its own. In the future the csusee to "roast" the telephone exchange will be greatly dimlnUhed.
