Government Gets Liquor Tax. Receivership Bill Costs. Cav alry Company to Organ ize. Releigb, Oct IS. It Is learned that J. D Eggleston, Jr., formerly Superinten dent of publlo schools at Aehevllle, bat now Bnperintendent of schools In Piinoe Edward county, Va., has declined the position of Editor of the Charlotte News on aocoant of slekness. He Is now In the hospital at Richmdnd, Us disease be ing appendicitis. The climate and crop report for this State for September wee issued today. The most temperature for the Bute was 70 dsgrees, halt a degree below the nor ma), the highest being 74, at Hatteras; the lowest 69 at Lynville. The highest absolute temperature was 80 degrees, on the 80:h, at Lexington, and the lowest 81 degrees on the 16th at Lynville. The average rainfall was S.V6, which Is a little over an Inch below the normal. The greatest rainfall was nearly eight Inches at Pittsboro, and the least a 8rd of an Inch at Waynesvllle. The drought now prevailing in Central North Caro lina and in fact over most of the Btate Is specially lef erred to In the reports. It breaks all Ibe records since 1887. There were killing frosts in parte of the moon tain region as early as September Revenue Collecor Duncan who is look Ing after Republican politics for Eastern North Carolina will make a tour through his county, Carteret, and will visit all the precincts. He was talking today about the enforcement of the Watts law, and saya that none of the State officials has ever examined what la knewn as record No. 10, In his office which shows the persons who have paid special taxes for the sale of liquor. He says that in nine cases 9ut of ten where salee of liquor are made In Watts law territory the government has got Its tax, the llq nor being sold in defiance of the State law. In other words the Revenue de partment has seen that Its law has been compiled with and that the Federal tax has been paid. The records contain a complete list and is really the only thing open to the general public. A bill of costs amonnting to $99S has been filed la the Federal eonrt herein the receivership matter of John P Cuy ler of New York against the Atlanlio & North Carolina Railway. Exceptions hare been filed by the attorneys for the railway. A troop of cavalry Is about to become a certainty here. The requisite number of men hu been secured and applica tion will be made to the governor for commiialon to organize as part of the nonn varouna rutieeei uaara. it aas been 18 years since there was a cavalry troop, this having been the Scotland Neck Hountalned Riflemen. The Btate will of conrre.lf the troop Is admitted to the National (Inard, uniform and equip It, but of course the members will have to furnish their own months, the Btate allowing pay for these only when the organization Is on ordered tours of doty Georgia it the only State In the United states whloh has a regiment of calvary. Light batteries of artillery and troops of cavalry are necessarily much more ex pehslve than Infantry organisations. Howe's Movlnr Pictires.
