C Jan. 85, 1905. REASONS FOR OPPOSITION TO A&'.NCLEASE. And now font month after, how la thli lease liked by the bailneaa men and citizens of New Bern and this taction? That la the question wbioh The Journal Is wing to Klve In Individual expression la Us columns, with the name of the persons interviewed, so there can be no questions as to the reliability of what Is felt on the lease matter, ana now us ei fects are appreciated by those whoa In terests are both Identified with the roadJ and whose personal business relation are affected under the new order of management of this property' by the llowland Improvement Company. Judging from the above,-which we clip from the New Bern Journal, one wonld think that the Atltnllo and North Carolina railroad had been built and maintained at a heavy expense for years by the state for the special benefit and convenience of 4he citizens cf the town of New Bern. The people of that town seem to lose the Idea that this railroad was owned by the entire atate which kept It np. They Mem to think that the balance of the state ahonld be taxed for their convenience. Of course New Bern wants the general office, the shops and all other of the railway de partments located there. No one can blame them for this. But they ahonld not expect this to be done to the dlsad vantage of the system and to the detri ment of the balance of the atate. It would have suited the New Bern Ipeople better If the state, instead of leasing the road had established a -system of free psssenger and freight transportation for all the business men and cilzens of that town, but luce measure would not have been relished by the people of the other sections who are a mack Interested in the state getting a return for Ita invest ments in me road as are the New Bern leople. The esteemed Wilmington Messenger in its Issue of 20th Inst, publishes the above editorial under the head, "New Bern SttU Kicking." Our contemporary makes an error la it first statement, for the people here have no Idea that the State has done so much for this property, the fact being that the people of Craven ooanty, paid more money lor this property than the Btate did, and having done this, the peo ple will Insist that they bs not discrimi nated against, even if the polll saw fit to lease out the A, A N.
