P ; i JFFICIAL PAPER OF NEW BERN AND CRAVEN COUNT?. - t New Bern, N. C March 22, 1905. THE FAILURE TO SUCCEED. Nothing apparently worka so harshly and crushingly to the individual, as the failure to succeed in any undertaking in life. The oft quoted "making good' is what counts, and to fail, means a personal discomfiture which is almost impossible to overcome by subsequent endeavor. Two recent notable illustrations in military life, of failure, are the cases of General Stoessel at Port Arthur, and General Kuropatkin in Manchuria. Both of these Russians are now before the Czar, to be given trials for failing to hold off or defeat the Japanese forces, which were sent against the men under them. Public opinion in their, country when? these men are to be tried, perhaps does not varv trreatlv from the opinion ol the outsitle world. There may be ex pressions of sympathy, an occasional voice that they did all that they could under existing conditions, yet the gen oral Bcntiment is that both were fail urea, and that not succeeding makes their retirement natural and logical. If either or both-Russian had nut death, it would have been recorded to their glory, and the world's praise would have beehs accorded them as though they had succeeded in defeating their opponents on the battlefield. And so it is in every day life, no ex cusc is sufficient to offset failure of the individual, no matter in what sphere of life the failure is made. There may be sympathy expressed for the person, the faint praise, "well that was hard f ought for," but it was a failure and it count ed only as-a failure, and the record was such, with all that such a failure means in any walk of life. It is not that men and women do not rise stronger from failures, and win greater successes, but generally speak ing failure means loss of active endeav or for future success, although no one should permit a single loss or failure to attain a sought for object, prove an obstacle to prevent any future effort to gain other successes.
