C, April 3 State Audi tor Dixon, as was first stated in this correspondence took ground against the inscription on the-roemorial to be dedi cated next , Monday, at ' Appomattox. Letters are coming in tirhim from con' federate veterans endorsing his views A letter today from General ' William. R. Cox, whose brigade fired the last volley there, says: "I fully endorse your views as to inscription on the monument at Appomattox. I Gave written to chair man Henry A. London of the monument committee, that I do not propose to be present at the unveiling. " Another letter is from James T. i Morehead of Greensboro, and says: "Is it too late to change the legend of Appomattox monu ment, to one simply, saying, that it marks the spot where the last gun was tired, and that it was fired by a North Carolina brigade?" Jim Eagles a young sporting man who has been much in evidence here for some time, was before the mayor here today under the new law, charged with being a professional gambler and living in idleness. He entered a plea of not guilty and also one of nolo con tendere. Upon this mayor Powell fimd him $25 and, costs, which he immediate ly paid.
