"JFFICIAL PAPER OF NEW? BERK AND
CRAVEN COUNTY.
New Bern, N. C., April . 1906. -
ARE FURTHER FIRE
NEEDED?
WARNINGS
Again have the citizens of New Bern
received a warning through a costly fire
It is a warning which came and is to be
added to the previous ones of the last
few months, all costly fires to a few in
dividuals, but which point out most
vividly the dangers which lie at every
property or house owner's door in this
city, and from which none may escape,
except through providential interser-
ence.
The fire of the early morning of April
bevtnth, had conditions which fought
against its getting beyond all control,
as have the previous fires. An inch
and one quarter rain fall the day before
proved of inestimable value to surround
ing property, that might have caught
without the rainfall. Another impor
tant element was the direction of the
wind which carried the heat, sparks,
and dames towards the more open and
less exposed property, and away from
buildings which if once on fire would
have wrought untold losses.
While the Friday fire has removed an
element of danger, there is yet remain
ing dangers to property and building
from fire in New Bern. There is yet a
fire department, which has in its class,
namely volunteers, no superiors as fire
fighters. But this volunteer service is
not what New Bern demands. This
city demands a paid fire department and
under a chief who shall draw pay for
his services, and who shall be able to
command the water service that it may
be adequate when the fire alarm Sounds
Another most Important consideration
that demands attention is, in what eon
dition are the centers of the blocks,
what combustible tubbish is behind,
around or under buildings, and what of
the dangers of fir which always lurk
in old and unoccupied buildings
sheds?
An act passed by the last legislature
calls for fire districts to be established
and maintained in towns and cities
of
1000 Inhabitant and above. Here is
becrmninfr for Impioved fire conditions
in New Bern and the others are as im
peratively aemanded, if there Is to
. any comparative security against ire,
and a practical security against any dls
tractive conflagration.
Have not the fire warnings
enough? Why will houae m iters, and
owners of any padahable piopcrtj
stand around at each success) rs bic
firs, knowing Ota frightfulneas of
