Chicago, April 80. Chicago had on working clothes today as a result of the teamsters' strike, which today failed of spreading and of settlement. From daylight until dark, down town 'streets were crowded with heavily laden wagons, giving the ', city" a week day appearance. Believing that the light now going on for supremacy between the Employers' Association of Chicago and the anion teamsters is to be a pro tracted one, business men today sought to procure an extra stock of material and supplies. Every available team, and even one-horse vehicles, were t.rought into use during the day to re plenish coal bins and to obtain other material necessary to the transaction of business. . D. Mclver and Miss Mary Patter- too which occurred at half past five at the home of the bride. The ceremony was performed in the presence of the immediate relatives of the bride. Rev H. S, Bradshaw was the officiating clergyman. The wedding was the most uneon ventional of any marriage that has hap pened in this city for long time. None of the intimate friends of eKherparty had the suggestion of a suspicion that our popular barrister frieod was going to take onto himself a wife although several wondered why "Mae" waste such a hurry during the entire day.Tha fact was not known until b arrived at the A A N C cUpot with his bride pre paratory to leaving for Philadelphia sad the news came in the ssost matter of f act manner Imaginable; almost as If H were an every day occurreoce. The taking of evidence in the damage suit of Pegram vs Seaboard Air Line for $35,000 damages for the burning of John M. Wilson to death in the Hamlet Compress fire in 1902 was concluded to day and the argument by counsel and the charge to the jury will take place tbmcrrow. An effort was made to show that the fire was from a spark from a wood-burninar engine and the rtilroad company was therefore liable. On the other hand the railroad company sojght to show that such was not th source of the fire and that even if it had been Wilsons act in rushing back into the compress after the tire was started as reckless and rash to a de gree that relieved the company from liability. The city election held today was the most quiet ever known in Raleigh, it being the merest formality for the con firmation - of the nominations made in the recmt legalized democratic pri mary. James I. Johnson is Mayor. W. W. Wilson City Clerk, Thos Badger police justice and John S. Jones City Tax Collector. There was no ticket in opposition to any of the democratic nominees. It seems settled now that the State Board of Education will soon make an order reducing the number of colored State Normals from four to two. Last year they were reduced from aix to four. The schools now in operation are at Winston, Franklin ton, Elizabeth City and Fayetteville. The board is convinced that concentration with more m proved plants and apparatus is the solution of the problem. Makos etgUao and aUmiUUc per. frl. Mak w r4 blood and bona.
