There was a magnificent assembly at the New Masonic Theatre , yesterday afternoon which attested in a most em' phatic manner the place the Confeder ate soldier has in the heart of every true southerner. Storm has no terror when the cause of the derailed soldiers is to be heard and though the story of their bravery be ever so often told, the rehearsal is very pleasant and interest' ing. The rain came just before the exercises commenced and doubtless kept a few away but the great mass of people showed their love and gratitude in a free hearted manner. The exercises at the Theatre were conducted as indicated by the program published in yesterday's Journal. Capt. Matt Manly presided and introduced the speaker, Gen. W. R. Cor, of Tarboro. His address was a brilliant discourse and evidence ot appreciation was given by ' the audience at frequent inter vals. He said that no people would be re jected who had not enough respect for thems jives to respect their ances tors. This, he said the people of New ern had. Her sons had made the Old North State famous. The eminent jurist and poet Gaston, on whom if only the fact of the song was credited to him, it would be suf ficient to give him immortal glory. The scholarly and ecclesiastical Craven whose interest in education won him a name and reputation cherished far be yond the boundaries of the State. And there were many others who may be accounted as belonging to New Bern who have come to be bright and shin ing lights in the history of the Stat. He spoke finely of the re-united na tion, the strength and glory it had at tained and of the part Southern men had In maintaining those elements of the nations greatness. It kn't sectional ism that makes a nation; no south; but men who ross above sectionalism and nude their duty to their country para mount to all others. The address waa inspiring and listen ed to with wrapt attention. All of todays ses sion was devoted to routine business of the lodge and it is expected that the election of officers for the ensuing year and the selection of a place for the next Grand Lodge will come up tonight. The principal feature of the observ ance of Memorial Day here was the de livery of an address on "Manly's Bat tery" by Col. W. L. Sanders, who was a member of the battery. This was in the Metio.olitan Hall under the susj i ces of the Daughters of the Confede racy and the Ladies Memorial Associa tion. There was a procession to the Confederate cemetery where the graves of the Confedrate dead were decorated and then there was the serving of lunch eon to the Feterans by the ladies in Capital Square. It seems that the voyage must have been a long tedious one as nine days had been consumed in making the place of the accident. No particulars as to the' cause of the slow progress could he ascertained, the sailors being somewhat reticent, not wishing to say anything that would reflect on their captain. It seems that some miscalculation had been made and the vessel grounded be fore the nearness of land was real ized. " The accident occurred Tuesday morn ing at 1:30, the schooner running hard and fast upon Core Bank. All efforts to release her being of no avail. At 3 o'clock the life saving crew of Core Bank sighted the wreck and went to the rescue, but it was not effected until six o'clock in the afternoon. Three of the seamen immediately set 1 o it for Atlantic and from there were transported to Beaufort, thence to New Bern, whore they arrived as above stated, and where they are waiting to secure passage to their homes. The re mainder of the crew, the captain and three others are still at Atlantic. It is said that there is no hope to save the vessel, and that it is fast going to pieces.
