C.; June. 7, 1905 SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT NEW BERN'S GRADED SCHOOLS.',, Superintendent Craven's report on the Graded Schools of this city, which is published in this issue of the Journal is an interesting and valuable one, and to every parent, specially,' is it a docu ment which demands the most careful reading and study. - There is no mistaking, the positive- ness of the language throughout the re port, as representing the true feeling's of Superintendent Cravens-it has been unsatisfactory year to him in many ways, yet the months which have been apparently without good results, have yielded to the final months of the school, before its closing, and the marked im provement in the final weeks were well worth the annoyances '"previously en dured, and only those who have visited the school at different periods during the year, can realize the changes . for the, better, not merely in a scholastic sense, but in the higher moral and dignity, which has been Infused into the minds of the pupils, and borne out S i their actions, in every department of the school. No higher attainment could have been secured than that of fixing upon every pupil the value of every minute of time, and what it means to be prompt in attendance at the minute of the schools opening. That this has been effectively taught and impressed, is to be noted by the vast falling off in the number of tardy pupils. Not least important are the recom mendations offered, and that the Board of Trustees has unanimously adopted hem and will put them into effect, indi cates the confidence in which Mr. Cra ven is held, and as a close observer of the Journal can see much benefit that will come from the proposed improve ments. ' '- T ' But while most parents who read this. will approve of it, there is more for them to do than this. It is the same acceptance that is given to the indivi dual reports of the children, which are brought to the homes. There is more. than this for parents to do. Reports tell m ich, but a personal visit to the school room is needed, on the part of every parent, to see the teacher and note the appearance of the child in " the school If their shall be an earheat studv of the child in the school room, as well as the carefuk noting of ' each report of the . child, by the parent, then will there be indeed a maricea improvement in w Graded School of this aitv. and the next report of the Superintendent will reveal It in every line, .- ' '?tflT$Xtl ' ' The law-making "buaine's of New .
