The following, lines were written on a scrap of blotting paper by the author who requests that his name be with held, upon a visit to Cedar Grove Ceme tery of this city, where he saw the tomb of Wm. Gaston- -author of the patriotic song, "Old North State" "I have always," says the writer, had a passionate love for poetry, ana this piece especially. When ever I would hear it, my heart would be filled with a longing withy a desire that words could not express that life could not satisfy" "Before the strains of the Old North State, all other rythem and beauty would fade to nothingness. The sweet lines of Milton, which at other times possessed such mystic charms of beauty and Kght were then reduced to simple words void of all euphony. The silvery notes which fell a shining pearls from the throat of the little mocking bird, when compared with the angelic sweet of "Old North State," lost all of their harmony and charm and were only simple chirps." "It is simple, it is aweet, it is grand and ahould b memorised by every true Carolinian. It ahould be taught to the school children in their tender years thus Unking thair heart closely to their native Stata. The "Old North StaU, Forever," la a good motto." TBI OLD NOSTH STATE. . IN MEM0RIAM. f Our community was saddened by the deattvof Lewis Albert Thomas, which occurred Friday, September 15th, about 6 o clock in the afternoon, after a brief illness. Drs. Duffy of New Bern, Disosway of Maysville, and Blount of Swansboro, were the doctors in attendance. They pronounced the disease as Congestion of the Brain and other internal org ins. But alas! medi- calakill was unavailing and after lay ing in agony, moving neither his limbs nor speaking for three whole days and nights, death quietly relieved him of his suffering. His remains were in terred in the burial grounds at Taber nacle Church. , He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis B. Thomas, of Olympia, Pamlico coun ty, N. C, and came to this place about two years ago, where he was general manager of the Swansboro Land and Lumber Company'i logging business at this place, and at the' time of his death was at his uncle's, Mr. D. S. Aman. He leaves a father, mother, four brothers and three sisters besides a host of relatives and friends to mour.i his death. He was but 25 years of age, jost in the dawn of a glorious and promising manhood, and was a man of remarka ble energy and ability. He was a prominent and successful business mi n and was liked and respected by evi ry one who knew him. He was of gotd Christian character, a devoted son and brother, and with his kind and jovial disposition, readily made friends with every one he met, all of whom are shocked at nis untimely death. But bereaved family and friends, weep not for i not our loss Heaven's and our loved ones gajn T Trust all to God. Remember that "Nothing is our own. So firm was the confidence in the acceptibility of this seemingly never to-wear-out mixture of stage merri ment that all manner of reverence wa shown its appreciative worth, by giving it a uew aim tpeciauy emuoraie scenic environment and the compliment of a company of such artists as would im part an improved flavor to its already fine reputation. None of the latest song hits have been allowed to escape notice by Che talented singers employed in the pres ent cast, and ever so many new frills and follies have been judiciously in fused with the main object of healthful rollicking fun constantly in view. Among the especially chosen artists Miss Lillian Lawson in whose care is entrusted the role of "Teddy", is re lied upon for an unusually spirited per- iormance ana tne unanimous press interest in behalf of her versatile and dainty endeavors bespeaks a wise se lection of a successor to many cele brated ladies of the stage who are in debted to this original character for their advance in the profession. From all accounts Miss Lawson is as charm ing a vocalist as she is a capital actress of the comedy school. A. P. N. Whitford Hardware Co. Incorporated Special to Journal. Raleigh, Sept. 19.
