These critics, however, should . remember,' that there are other disagreeable his torical occurrences which have been given dramatic action , which afford plenty of precedents for The Clansman; and, if there is anything repellent and unnecessary ia producing such a play there is a morbid nature that craves and demands it and The ' Clansman has as good material for the satisfying of such natures as any play that has proceeded it It k not the purpose of the Journal to enter Into a lengthy discusiiou of the right or wrong of. the play a written by Mr. Dixon. It simply wishes to com ment on the play.' Ths Clansman pre sents most admirably the condition of the south at the close of the war. 'It shows bow necessary was the xiatence of such a stem, relentless band of men as were the Ko Klux Klan, and how it was th means teethe end of affecting for all Urns white supremacy. . Th character which was super emi oent in the production last' sight was Silas Lynch; the colored Lt Governor of 8oulh Carolina. - Big physically and mentally, his machinations and plotting were ths thing that kept the Interest at hinheet possible pitch.
