The unraveling of the mystery that surrounds the killing of Charles G. Smith of Petersburg last Saturday here is attracting a keen intetest here and it looks now like it will be bard to prove that either one of ifie two men under arrest, Lilister and Morris fired the the fatal shot or rather which one of them did. After the shooting it was published here and elsewhere that the dead man was the same as the man Smith who was ar rested for picking the pocket of a man at the Raleigh dispensary, Police Jus tic Badger and others identifying as sics. ' However these officials and others have since decided that they were in error and that the men were hot the same although they resembled each other considerably. It is an amus ing fact that the man whose pocket w&e picked by the other Smith was an inmate of the county poor house and he htyl $1.40 which was recovered when the fellow wag arrested and gave the $100 bond. Regret is heard on every hand for the fact that the building committee of the grand lodge masonic temple have decided not - to proceed with the erection of the temple, but have post poned further action until the next session of the grand lodge in January for the reason that the plans ae adopt ed will require $165,000 and all that the ledge has authorized to be expended is $135,000. They do not wish to reduce die plans. All the tenants in the old buildings that are to be torn away t give place to the new temple had been notified to vacate and several had al ready done so. It is more than proba ble that the grand lodge will arrange for the work to begin in the early spring. Governor Glenn is to appoint within the aen few days a committee of phy sklans to examine the Condition of ex Sheriff Rowan Rogers and J. P. Sorrel and ascertain whether their close con finement ia injuring their health and if it is that the Governor will grant them the privilege of "prison bonds", they ' ..... . . are serving terms in jau xor tampering with the jury in the noted Gattia-Kilgo suit Both are old men, and their con finement is said to be going very hard with both of them. .Governor Glenn gave out a statement this morning to the effect that he had had his attention called to tbe 'news paper accounts of the manner in which the cell was being fixed up m the Dur ham county Jail for W. R. Murray to serve "tbe two years sentence for kill big hfs uncle J. 8.
