Is World's Meat Producer
Washington, Jan. 8. No other coun
try produces so great a surplus of meat
and no other country, except Ireland,
sends so many cattle to the English
market as the United States, according
to a bulletin issued by the Department
of a griculture today. During the year
ended June 30, 1904, the exports of
live meat animals and packing-house
products were valued at $217,000,000,
while the exports of United States
cattle to British ports during that year
amounted to 387,000 head, valued at
$36,000,000, and along with them were
223,000 sheep, worth nearly $2,000,000.
Belgium has become an important
destination for United States cattle,
and more than 18,000 were exported to
Cuba during 1904.
The leading competitor of the United
States supplying fresh beef for the
British market is Argentina, while
Canada said to be about the only com
petitor in exporting cattle, hams and
lard.
The bulletin states that the year 1906
will undoubtedly prove a notable o&e
in the tariff history of Europe, impoi
tant advances having been made by
several of those countries.

and applauded it warmly. Mr. Dixon
made a speech at the end of tho second

"I was told that this play would suc

rejected in the North. Your reception
tonight has convinced me that there is

are one people."
Mrs. Eddy Does Not Prohibit Her Fol
lowers Civing Christmas Presents.
The New York dispatch which .was
sent oat gtying this wrong impression
of the facts, I find has been largely
copied and referred to, and no doubt
was simply the result of an exaggerat
d sense of by-law adopted by the
Christian Science ; Church and intend
ed to ptit aside the sending con era tu
la tor tetters and tilts to Mrs. Eddy.
True she does, as do other reug&iist,
emphasise the true spiritual Importance
of Christmas as in contrast with a Urn
of mere material gift making,; but she
baa Dot forbiddan the exchange of gifts
rxi the part of bet followers. No one
eoutd fee more appreciative r of, the
sweet courtesy and kindness of those
who thus remember her simple token
but she alone can know how much more
valuable hr time is to those loving
friends when fltvoted to the spiritual
interest and upbuilding of the Christian
Science movement.

ufc 'Of The
Stomach
Insidious Nature of The Disease How to
Recognize and Cure It.
Ulcer of the stomach may exit for
years without very marked symptoms,
excepting those caused by indigestion.
In good health, the stomach resists
the action of the gastric , juices, but
when weakened, thc membrane is bad
ly nourished and the digestive fluids act
upon it aswell as upon the food, keep
ing up until perforation of the stomach
occurs. - In advanced cases of ulcer of
the stomach there is much discomfort
after eating, with a constant gnawing
sensation between meals, pain trum
the pit of the stomach back to the
shoulder blade.
At the first symptoms of indigestion,
treatment should at once be started
with MJ-o-na. This is a scientific rem
edy adapted specifically to one purpose
the cure of stomach troubles. It is so
uniformly successful that F. S. Duffy
gives a signed guarantee with every 50
cent box that the money will be re
funded if it does not cure.

A Tribute to William B. Lane
Editor of the Jotrrnal.
I feel that I cannot refrain from add
ing my tribute to the memory of my
friend, Sheriff William B. Lane, whose
sudden death was a source of deep re
gret to myself as well as his many
friends. Identified all his life with the
interests of Craven county.he endeared
himself to her people because of his
kind heart, love of his fellowmen, and
absolute fidelity and honesty. I am
proud to say he was my personal friend
and his friendship was of the kind that
knew no change. When I saw him
last, before leaving for Washington, I
said to him, "If I can be ot service to
you do not fail to command me, and
write me, anyhow, not about politics,
but a heart to heart letter." His re
ply was, "I always do that with yju. "
He was not only a man of warm heart
and great strength of character, but a
great reader of books and possessed
great knowledge of human nature. I
feel sure that ho was prepared for the
final summons, and his memory, I
know, will bo long cherished by the
peopk' of Craven county with whom he
and h'n family have been identified for
generations.

Editor Journal:
Your paying subscriber feels that it
is due him that you allow this state
ment in the columns of your ably edit

It is due that the State witnesses in
the case where Isaac II. Smith has
stolen church money should at once go
before some magistrate, an officer of
the law, and have him apprehended.
You owe this to this community
since you have made the matter pub

Now if the State witness or witnesses
and the officers of the law of Ct even

The State Board of Health has issued
an Important bulletin on the causes and
prevention of comsu ration, tubercu
losis phtisis or pulmonary consumption.
Thia-disease is well called the "great
white plague" and its prevalence is, a
menace to all. Science has shown that
it is disease to be very much feared
and therefore the means of protection
from it must have wide publicity.
Dreaded and fatal as the disease is
it is preventable and the Board of
Health has prescribed some rules in
this bulletin and it is urged that the
public take an interest in it as nearly
everybody has a friend who is victim of
consumption. By following the direc
tions set forth in the bulletin.
The circular and printed matter on
other diseases will be sent to any one
on application to Richard H. Lewis,
Secretary State Board of Health, Ral
eigh. Dragging to Death.
A miserable invalid suffering from
disordered female functions, monthly
pains, nervousness, fallings, dizziness,
indigestion, biliousness, constipation,
etc., will find relief in wine of Cordui
and Thedford's Black-Drought, two of
the most valuable, reliable, scientific,
curative medicines known for the treat
ment of sick women. They are sold at
all drug stores, and should be in every
home. Try them.
