January BO.-There 'came today as the aftermath to the 'jury's; verdict, yesterday in the case against Lilliston,' the Norfolk, Va,, fair fakir, convicted of killing Charles G. Smith, during fair week in Raleigh, and a sen tence o,f fourteen years In the peniten' tiary, evidence that, is entirely new and unheard, which places ;the matter in the light of a real sensation. .' Notwith standing, the fact : (hat the. case was tried, first in J;he city court and then in Wake county Superior Court, with a great array of witnesses and' the usual reports of that trial by the newspapers there appeared today three other wit nesses who taal o affidavi t i to the new facts as W the shooting..5 One woman, who is well known in Kaleigh, States she was sitting- to the ladies waiting room at the Unioh passenger Station on the afternoon the tragedy took place that she was sitting ;within a few feet of the spot where the, manvSmith was Shot, and could cjeayl see the flash of a pistol, hetview as she sat not being obstructed by any part of the crowd, and right near the glass partition di viding vthe men's waiting room from that occuDied bv ladies. Clark and Lilliston, while the Jstiooting were in another part of the waiting room for men, and that a third party altogether different, and whom she would be able to identify, committed the deed, She aiso srvs that eifcht shots were fired, ras sh4 recounted tohor friends the next dav. ' thonsrh seven was the number accredited.- This woman saw the Smith man lean 'over and press his hands to his aid s as if in grear pain, then saw him sink to a seat from which he was later removed to the ambulance for hospital treatment The testimony 6f the tw other wit nesses will be virtually the same thing, though their ; relative positions were not quite so bear. Messrs. ' Argo and Shaffef "and ; W. N. Holding, counsel for Lilliston, ate together going oyer the matter this afternoon, and there is no doubt that there will be immediate action . m the affair that has created such interest in the list of crimes in NoVth Carolina. - f ' ' - - f - In talking with J.illis ton's counsel your correspondent was told that there was little doubf now : that there was perjury or a case of conspiracy. This view of tha matter may be strengthen ed by the general estimate always placed upon such associates 'as are us ually followers of the fairs and such kindred lines of wotlC , The principal witness, the woman here , in Raleigh who was in U.e waiting rnom, first ap proached James Lilliston , the grief- stricken father of the condemned man, from Norfolk, am) told . him' that ah had remained quiescent because she did not dwire the prominence that Is always given by a court trial, but she had concluded - she could not afford to allow an innocent man to suffer, partk utarly by nucha sentence, when a guilty man had committed the murderous deed and hai made good his escape. Another witness refrained from speech because ho felt a prejudice toward all fairfakjrs and men of uat class. ' v : . , - Ibis moss summing and anuroa turn ha the case, after, trial and, judg ment will come a a distinct surprise t) t )0 people - who have from day to day followed the WaUmony and tbeVrt- on of the entire ease, which consumed more than a week in Wake count Su perior court . . Late this afternoon Mr. J. W. Grain ger received a telegram from W. H. Ashley, of Paterson, N. J. stating that his syndicate would accept the offer ot the furniture factory directors to sell the property for $12,000 and check for that amount was mailed today, lhe sale is the culmination of negotiations which have been in progress for some time. The sale of the Kinston furniture factory means great things for Kins toa, as It is understood that the buyers will turn the plant into a big silk mill, employing hundreds of skilled opera tives. A complete story will be given later ia these columns. The Raleigh - Progressive Farmer sounds, a note of warning to the farm ers of the South about what it calls the stock food swindle. ' It says that one of the most' outrageous frauds n9W being perpetrated upon the-' American farm er is that of prepared stock : foods- common meal, bran, etc, with - a little cheap sulphur, salt,' Epsom jalts, pep per, saltpeter, etc., added : to change the taste, r and the 'mixture - (hardly more 'valuable than ordinary ship stuff) P0t up in naming packages, advertised in big illustrated ads in : farm papers, and sold to gullible farmers' at .from $250 to $2,500 a ton.,". -The Progresive Farmer'says further ' that some time ago, the chief Southern contributor Of one of the farm papers mdst largely circulated in Ndrth Carolina -and ad joining States, wrote an exposure of the whole miserable fraud and sent it to his paper- The reply came back: 'The Blank Stock Food Company pays us $3,000 a year for advertising, and we would lose it if we' were to print you letter. - Please don't insist" It is quite proper that while the pa tent medicine nostrums are getting a drubbing, the stock food should be ex posed, and this The Progressive Farmer-proposes to do. If the frauds are of the nature complained of, we hope the exposure will be of a nature as to pro tect the farmet s against jhem. Char lotte Chronicle. I. 0. 0. Editor Journal: I do not remember ever calling upon you in life, asking you to allow me the use of your columns. I being -efcitizen and taxpayer, I now propose to speak out as such, for the Citizens and for the taxpayers of New Bern and Craven county. It is a serious matter to accuse, an honest man of stealing church money or brand him as a thief. This jneans criminal libel suits and civil suits to l e brought, and this means a burden on the taxpayers, if in no ether way than to consume the time o the court in trying the cases. But as a citizen and taxpayer I par ticularly desire to call attention to this one fact that the State witness who ap peurotl oe.uro uiatiop Robert Strange, should appear in print or some way be fore, the public, this community, and make good the charge. If he don't, ignominous shame, and the finger Of scorn of this honest community will ever point at him.. - V . A.
