Ey Work " -. , T Brtik Out. - : Five colored prisoners confined in r. -i - i Craven county jail for larceny, made their way to freedom early Wednesday, supposed to be between 4 and 5 o'clock, j... . , . and left no trace of where they went after leavinir . Douglass, Will Jones, Cornelius Staton and Cleveland Taylor, were locked up as usual in their cell, Tuesday night, all occupying otS cell, a large one. Wednesday morning when , jailor Wil liams went to the jail to make his usu al morning visit, ,he discovered the es cape, ; , An examination of the jail revealed the method pursued to be as follows: The prisoners had tampered with a bolt which held the sliding bar that held the bars of the cell door. : Using their com bined force the bolt was broken, and reaching outsida through the grating, the bars were pulled back, and the door opened. On the outside of the cell, the men pulled off a piece of scantling used as a prop, and with this went to the door leading into the ctrridor,' prized apart an iron bar gruling and crawled through, t . Into the corridor, the escap ing men realised that to break open tne outside door would arouie the keep er,, so going into an unoccupied cell, they found only the grating of iron bars of a rear window . between : them and liberty. Again the wooden beam was Inserted and with little effort two bars were wrenched loose and it was just climb out for the 'meit'-liC An after examination shows how in secure the, jail is, in its fastenings. 1'he fastenings on the cells are clumsy, and would not baffle any common intel ligence.,. The door into the Corridor with its small bars offers no special obstacle, while '"the iron bars "on the rear window, do not run through the frame, just inserted to a narrow mar gin, and a strong man could pull them out while with any kind of a lever to force an opening, requires no great effort. ? i About dark last "night ' Will Jones gave himself up, while Sheriff Kiddie ha his deputies out after the .others and it is likely they will .all be caught today.
