Never bufore per
perhaps in the history
of Craven cour ty court have two juries
been interested in cases at the same
time' in which the defendant U one and
the same man. The Journal yesterday
morning spoke of the ease of the State
va William Sultan. As is well: known
the jury is out on the first case having
been given to their consideration about
midnight Wednesday and up to the
time of going to press had not reachad
a' verdict. On the opening of court
yesterday morning the preliminaries of
trial No. 2 wero begun. There are
three indictments against Sultan but. it
is not likely than more than the two
eases wiil be tried at the present term
of court. x
" The morning session was taken up
with hearing motions arguments, affi
davits and other technicalities incident
to the trial of the second case. Judge

business this morning at 9:30 o'clock.

What's sauce for the goose is aaude
for the gander b an aphorism which
may be taken in a practical sense many
times and while so orach is being said
about the shifting nuisance on the A.
and N. C, road we wish to suggest that
, efe othera
The Atlantic Coast Line railroad has
long been switching backward and for
ward on its tracks on Queen street and
the people affected by it on account of
the noise, dirt and smoke have allowed
it t be one of their daily crosses and
h ve meekly gone about their work
making no complaint, although the
nuisance of the Atlandic Coast Line is
just as bad as that of the A. and N. C.
1 1 seems that the ordinance of the
city fathers relative to the shifting of
cars ought to extend to the A. C. L. as
well as the A. and N. C. The freight
trains are in the habit of coming into
the station at almost any time of the
night and the wheezy and rheumatic
old engines puffing and blowing can
not help but cause a great deal of djs
c mfort Then it is not an unusual
tiling for the engines to run off the
track and that always makes a bad
matter worse. But an accident like a
lU'i nilment can be overlooked but the
omistant din, dangerous conditions and
altogether disagreeable features of
shifting have got past the endurance
of those who live neighbors to the At
lantic Coast Line yard. Complaint has
been made a good deal of late but it is
liktly the company will assume that
as people have stood it so long they
should not begin to kick at this late
day.

The Srsat Pierce Anasement Co. Kirs Week
- eUorHSOUi,
The Pierce Amusement Co. who open
in New Bern April 80th for tho K. of
P's Big Gala Week have just closed a
successful engagement' in Goldsboro
and the Argus of that city has the fol
lowing to say:
"The Pierce Amusement Company
closes a successful week here tonight.
It has been a week of unalloyed pleas
ure and only words of prais sre uponri
ail Brae, it nas been noticed and com'
mented -favorably upon by our be&t
people that there is not the usual ob
jectionable following of swindlers, etc.,
with the Pierce Company that follows
the wake of other amusement com
panies. Mr. Pierce's first-requisite ia
cleanliness and morality, and this alone,
may be credited his unbounded Mif-eese.
"Mr. George Marr, general agent for
the company made several claims when
his company opened here. The com
pany closes here tonight and all these
claims have been lived up to the latter.
The best people of the community have
been in attendance during the week.
"Goldsboro has had samples of Cur
nival Companies before which gave the
very name Carnival a black eye, but it
was up to Pierce to bring the first real
clean company to our city. It has been
a pleasure to lake a lady do vn to the
"Pierce Pike," which was devoid of
fakes or suerires'tive attractions. It is
tho finest, cleanest and be.st organiza
tion of its kind which has over toured
this section of the country, and a re
turn engagement will be welcomed by
our best people."
