The eight men and one woman were being taken fom the jail to the station, andatseven twenty o clock the whole crowd boarded the train for Atlanta, where they go to begin 8erv: ing sentences in the penitentiary. AH of the prisoners, except Mr, and Mrs. Smoot who gofor counterfeiting, were convicted at the present term of Fedtral court for illicit distilling. Last week B. ' F, Sprinkle of Rockingham, who wat convicted two years ago of defrauding , the government by juggling with reve nue stamps on whiskey packages, was sent to Atlanta to begin serving his sentence of two years. An unusual occurrence developed t day when it became kriuwn that Ace Dinkins, W R Ki icier and Frauk Eddie- man, whom the government alleges paid Congressman Blackburn the mooi f as fees for settling their cases before the Internal Revenue Commissioner, and who are the principal witnesses on the three grand jury indictments, were not only in Greensboro -but- were jr. con- ferencs with Blackburn and hi Attor neys. Enquiry developed another fact, that these men had been rtg'i'r.rly sub poenaed to appear instfvtcr to day at this term of the Federal i-ouit as wit nesses for defendant in the trial of the case of United States against E. Spen cer Blackburn. As tne trial has all along been set for nctt week, and ia designated as rpecisl term of the Circuit court, the proceeding are ooosid ered novcL Asked as to the matter, both Judge Boyd and District Attorney Holton said they knew nothing at all about it, and the Clerk of the court said that as he issued aubpoeauaa in blank he had no means of knowing for. whom they were wanted. Marshal Millikan adroited that his deputies had served the subpoenas but said he knew noth ing more about it and that it wan not an unusual thing so far as he knew. The Wonan's Missionary Society of rorest Avenue Uapusi enure b was recently organized with fifteen members and with proxpecta of an active and usual career. Mr. H. Judge Longcom- Panted the jury m high te.m- of praise on its excellent work and good suggestions for improvement of county institutions. The- report was as fol lows: 107 bills were presented, of these '65 were returned as "true," 25 as "not true" and 17 continued. They recommended that the county jail be supplied with new steel cells, thut.it have a new floor and that the court house and jail be heated by steam; that a kitchen be placed on the county home and that court room and offices be painted and otherwise improved. 'I ht. judge ordered, the clerk to make t-ntry in the books of reicord. The last session was called at eight o'clock to complete the business of the court Just after the opening the jury on the first case of the State vs Sultan came into the room and reported tiu' they were not able to obtain a veroict. They had been deliberating on the case for nearly 48 hours. No further ser vice required of them so they were dis charged. The attent ion of the court woa then called to the disposition of the second case against the defendant, William Sultan, he having been found guilty the counsel were given the opportunity to prove the financial condition of the defendant and give all auch facts as would be helpful to his cause. Several witnesses were examined tc establish his character. Judge Long entered on a brief re view of the case. He stated that the defense had failed to deny several slate menta made by l he State, the defend ant not having testified In his own be half, it was the province of the court to only consider what had been said and done and to take cognisance cf evidence. He talked strongly and plainly on the case and said that the only way to get rid of a bad law was to repeal it. Nothing was gained by dis obeying its provisions. Ha closed his talk with Imposing a sentence of a fine of $500 and five month in jail Th defendants attorneys immediately gave notice of appeal to Supreme court. ' Assisting Solicitor Moore were Mes srs A. I), and v. u ward; and tne counsal for Mr. Sultan were Metrr W. W. Clark, W. D. Mclver, M. DeW. Stevepson and It. B. Nixon.
