San Francisco, April 18. Shortly af ter five o'clock this morning this city was startled by a terrific earthquake. The people were driven from their homes and became panic stricken at the terrible conditions they were fac ing. The shock lasted fully three min utes, and in an amazing short time tho stalwart buildings were toppling to the ground and the frenzied populace were fleeing to places of safety. Quickly succeeding the first shock was the sec-1 ond one which seemed to complete the work of devastut ion r. far as felling the buildings was ruru-cwd. Then: wis not a structure in the city that was not damaged to a icreuteror 1ms extent. the Bulwtantial and co.stlv ofli"C biiili'- ins yieluing lo the great power as juickly as the more unpretenlions build'n rs. Fire Adds to Horror. Fire did almost as much damage an the earthquake, and the efforts to cheek the flames which were fanned to the greatest intensity by a high wind were handicapped by the water works beinjr destroyed. Consequently the water supply was soon exhausted and the firemen were helpless in increasing danger. Fire attacked and destroyed great buildings which had not been af fected by the shock, the Palace hotel; Sugar King CIhos Spreckles immense 17 story office building being among these. The Southern Pacific train brought in a ton of dynamite to the city and this han been utilized to hlow up walls and buildings to prevent the spread of the fire. The business sec tion is completely wrecked. This com prises Market street, Samson street to Water front and down to 10th atrect, an area of ten or fifteen blocks. The damage outside of this la probably not to great. The entire water front was on fire. In this ruin the postofflce, grand opera boose, Call building and Southern Paci fic of!ics are all included. The hotel Valencia collapsed, burying 76 gueata and the cheap tenements havo fallen and their occupants caught like rata in a trap. Eastern tourists are for the moat part believed to be aafe ax th hotel moatly frequented by them have not been damaged so much. Maay People KUIetf. Of course it Is impossible to fire a correct number of the dead. The tntl mate has been placed at H.owi. Over 400 have brn taktn from "no place and the drd are awn in all .Hrertiene). Witnesses not many (Special Correspondence.) Greensboro N. C. April 17 -The trial of Congressman Blackburn began in the circuit court here Monday morning but tha whole day was consumed in arguing demurrers to the bills of indictment, Judge Goff at six o'clock over ruling sune and ordering defendant to plead. Immediately after court met in the morning District Attorney Lewis call iug up the Blackbum cases announced that there were seven bills, four found at Asheville and three supplemental bills found at Greensboro court, charging defendant with having violated the statute forbidding members of Con gress from practicing for valuable con sideration before any bureau or de patmental officer of the government. He moved for a consolidation of all the bills. Many cases were cited in support of this posi tion, counsel also arguing that such a law wus unconstituional. For the Gov ernment Judge Lewis and Special As.-is taut Britt made exaustive arguments, citing the case of Congressman Driggs, Senator Burton and Senator Deidrich, as well as other cases. Jude;e Goff ren dered his decision over ruling the de murrer's. Judge Bynum gave notice of exec j tion to tho ruling. District Attorney I A wis then pressed his motion for c msolidation of the cases and was told to draw the order. Judge Lewie, the n c ill 'd for the "arraignient of the prisoner. Should the government insist on a verdict tomor row, one of acquittal is confidently expected Except ten character wit nesses, Blackburn was the only wit ness introduced by the defense. He swore positively that he had never re ceived a dollar to practice before the dep irtirents and that the money paid him by those distillers named in the bills of indictment was for services rendered in federal and state courts. The government had introduced two distillers who testified to having paid Blackburn five hundred dollars and fifty dollars as law fees but it was impos sible for the prosecution to get them to state that it was for settling cases be fore :he department at Washington.
