CUT OUT CONFETTI Practice Common - on Carnival Decision that May Soma Time Result Seriously. The Journal does not knock for the mere sake of knocking, but when there 4 a palpable nuisance in practice it is our duty to criticise. Whenever and wherever a carnival exhibits the sale -onfeiti is no small factor in the (general profits. A special confetti rivilege is considered a cinch and the practice of throwing the stuff ia uni versal. It is not only a nuisance but like many other things that are indulged in for mere sport are apt to be carried to dangerous extremes. There ia nothing to prevent a lot of the fine paper get ting into a person's throat and causing serious trouble and when it ia thrown nto one's eyes it will cause soreness and pain if nothing else. There have been occasions when small stones and irt have been mixed with the stuff and therein it ceased to be a joke. This crimejis not at tempted here very often and to have two men arrested for it one having three charges against him is therefore some thing out of the ordinary. Yesterday a colored man named Albert Morton, a drayman, was on trial before Justice Street at the city hall for attempting to pass a forged check at the National bank. Monday Chief Harget was called to the bank and took Morton into custody. Be said that the check was given him by a man who owed him money and he (Morton) was to return the balance to him. He said he did not know the name of his debtor although he had Jieen acquainted with him for several years, there were other peculiarities about hia statements that aroused suspicion . The check was in favor of the Fertil izer Shell and Bone Co. and counter signed by C. E. Foy for the New Bern Cotton Oil Mill and was for the sum of fifteen dollars. The name of C H Foy was clumsily endorsed on the back of the check when it should have been the payers name, J. Council Brown. Mr. Foy'sname was misspelled "Foye." The defendant was tested and in spite of his protestations of innocence show ed that he had inscribed the endorsers name on the check. The check was lost by a negro laborer and doubtless picked up in the road by Morton who was shrewd enough to see where he might be able to get a nice little wad. Morton was bound over to the Su perior court for trial under $100 bords. In default of bond he was committed to jail. Finest print butter, 30 cents per pound. Coast Line Market.
