On complaint of a negro railroad track walker, Charles Donnell, that Tom Whitfield, Charles Cecil and Will Stewart, colored, had waylaid and robbed him a few miles north of here, officers yesterday after noon arrested the three men and they are now in jail charged with highway robbery. Donnell said Stewart held a pistol at his head, while the others took his watch and all his money. The offi cers secured a hand car and overtook the men near Brown Summit. Being ordered to surrender, the man named Stewart drew a pistol and it snapped. He then jumped in the bushes and ran, the officers firing at him. He was struck in the left elbow, in the right arm: and in the leg, and surrendered, being hand-cuffed and brought to jail . It is not many weeks since a party of surveyors were at work on the north side of Neuse river, of whom it was said that they were laying - a-" route for the road to Washington. C, and further declared if the steel market is in the condition that rails may be had he hoped to have direct line from Norfolk to Raleigh in operation within a year. The completion of the line from Nor folk to New Bern, of which the con struction of the five-and-a-half mile bridge across Albemarle ' sound is a part, will he an immense benefit to Norfolk. Mr. Gannon says then trams can be run from New Bern in the morn ing so that shoppers from eastern North Carolina may spend a half day in Nor folk and return to their homes in the evening. Under the present conditions the entire day is consumed in the trip one way, while under the proposed new conditions the round -trip can be made in a day-and several hours spent in Norfolk. By the completion of this line Wash ington, Plymouth, Morehead City and Beaufort will also be brought in close touch with Norfolk. At the present time thirty-three miles of track from Washington to Raleigh have been hud. Unofficial reports have it that the Norfolk and Southern railway will not atop at Raleigh. In lumber circles it is believed the line will be extended on to the western pert or North Carolina and thence into the lumber districts of Georgia."
