It is said that such jealous Republicans as Harry Skinner, n. JU Grant, and JCL Harris favor these steps. One Republican said that there was correspondence in progress now with Congressman Blackburn witn a view to getting him in line and to cap ture the State Convention on these quee tions. It was added that his district would be solid for him andtbat i v rep resented 22 and 1-2 per cent of the Re publican strength in the State, and votes allowed, a convention being based upon the voting strength of the party. It was added that Bl per cent would give control of the State Convention and that the difference between that figure and 22 and 1-2 per cent is not much to overcome. Brads treat's to morrow will say for Richmond and vi cinity : The market for agricultural imple ments and vehicles is active and shows largely increased sales over previous years; the same is true with the har ness and leather market In this line some dealers have more order than they can fill, owing to the scarcity and high prices of leather. The tobacco market continues strong with high price ami good demands for all gradka. Fluctu ating m cotton during the week have been very narrow and the closing today is practically the same as a week ago. Trade continues good and spinners are well employed the world over. The spot sales in Liverpool this week have been very large and shows a disposition of foreign spinners to fortify them selves against any contingency that may arise. The new crop is doing well, but it is useful to note that influential firms such as W. P. Brown and Co. Theodore H. Price, S. M. Weed and Company, Latham, Alexander and Co., and Messrs Giles are giving out acreage figures showing very small increases. If the government on June 3rd should also show a very small increase, say not over 29,000,000 acres, it is likely the trade would become alarmed and bring about a higher range of prices. E. Spencer Blackburn to the graduating class at Dover Friday night was very largely4 attended and the audience highly appreciative. The advent of the brilliant young statesman to this section was not known very widely or there would have been a very much larger attendance, ilia visit was regarded by some an being not wholly of an Educa tional nature, hut there was so little time to give to political matters that all he could do was to note which way the politicalwind was blowing. He expressed himself as very confident of his success in the coming convention. He said it would be a fight to the finish; it was lick or be licked. His address was one of good advice and suggestions to the young graduates. A thorough education, is becoming a necessity. If a man' has no other ambition than to merely be able to read and write or hold an ordinary position in life he must have an education and the more eager he is 10 amount-to something the more learn ing he needs to have. The progress of the times; the intensity of competition demand that education of our youth be thorough and practical. There has been a revolution of educational ideas and we have all been caught in the great sweeping wave of this demand. While only a few years ago the edu cated men were in the minority now they are in the great majority and by information gained from statistics the majority is growing larger. He com plimented the students for their indus try and encouraged them to pursue their studies still further. His personal presence and matchlese oratory combined with the practical nature of his talk kept the audience enthralled with his words. His address continued for nearly an hour and was frequently interrupted by approving applause. He was introduced by Professor Moses, superintendent of the Dover school and was preceded by Mr. S. M ilrinson, county superintendent of edu cation. ine people oi Dover are justly en titled to tne distinction or beingjne most thoroughly alive to the subject of good schools of any people in the coun ty if not in the state. They recently held an election pn the local tax for schools question and adopted the meas ure without a dissenting vote. It a matter of considerable surprise and much gratification to learn that the people were so united on the question. The graduating class was unusually tine, composed of some eight or ten young men and women who acquitted themselves grandly in both the ex era see of Thursday and Friday nights. " Pamlico Co.
