The lady sang with wonderful precis ion and the strength, sweetness and control of her voice was splendidly demonstrated in the ana which was a. succession of running notes, a test and a strain on the human voice,' yet she sang the most difficult passages with ease, and grace. Pro duce dealers are receiving, large con signments of southern produce and vegetables for which they are receiving good prices. : Wholesale dry doods deal era continue to receive considerable filling in orders, but shipments for the fall stock has not yet commenced. They anticipate for this season large sales, as collections in this lire have been good. The wheat crop will be harvest ed within the next two weeks. ' This crop will be good and probably show an increase over that of 1906. . The re cent rnins on the Eastern Coast have been advantageous to farmers, espec tally tobacco and vegetable growers. The Pomona Manufacturing Compa ny at Greensboro, was granted an amendment to its charter, by which the author zad capital stock 1s increased by the Issuance of $100,000, seven year cu mulative, preferred stock, 1 The total Stock being $350,000. Lee H. Battle is president and A. L. Bain is secretary. The Security Fire Insurance Compa ny of Baltimore, Md., has withdrawn from the State because of its heavy losses by the San Francisco fire. The company is in no wise insolvent, but deemed it best to cease some lines ow ing to the fact that heavy losses were incurred at the time of the Baltimore conflagration. W. B. Streeter, Secretary to the North Carolina Children's Home Socie ty, Greensboro, is in the city after at tending the meeting of that organiza tion last night in its home offices. Mr. Streeter is pleased with the work of the society and its prospects. So far 147 children have been received and of this number 136 have been placed in homes. This has been accomplished since the organization in 1903. AU sup port is by voluntary contributions. Since the beginning there has been so contributed iq round numbers $15,000. At present, the resources show a deficit as the liabilities stand at $6,611.88, $488 of this amount having been brought over as such from May 1905. Vick. former agent of the East Caroll- ba Railway at FarmvUle,v who was ar rested at Tarboro Monday on the charge of embezzling funds of the ) company and brought to Greenville, was before Justice of tb Peace C. Rountree to day on preliminary, hearing. ) The tes timony of the prosecution was, in sub stance, that at various times ' Vick had taken money belonging to the railroad company and. endeavored to cover the embeulement'by false reports of col lections. ::v-7t W'XSt:! Pick offered no evidence in rebuttal and was bound over to the September term of Superior court in the sum of $1,000. The action against Vick was brought by the American Surety Com pany, of $ew Yor, in which company he was bonded as agent for the rail' road. Th surety company claims that hit shortage is $1,127. v W. V. Custer, representative of the Guarantee Company, of Atlanta,- was also present and an interested specta tor at the preliminary trial today. Glenn after conference with military 'officers an nounces that the First and Second Reg iment North Carolina National Guard Encampment at Morehead City will be gin August 7th and may continue eight days, 'contingent with decision as to placing brigadiers or regiments: The Third , Regiment will go into camp at Chicamauga. . The latter date has not yet' been arranged for. Indications are that about ninety, per cent of the strength of the guard will go into camp and it is the wish of the officers to have a rnajority of the men for a short while rather .than a small portion only for a longer period. .
