What is New Bern doing to get this school?. The citizens Of Klnston are. working hard to have It located there; Washington ls busy making efforts for it, the Chamber of Commerce- having : become interested in the matter! Greenville, Rocky Mount, Tarboro, and Wilson are all eager for it and one of these places will get It if we don't watch out It is .possible the citizens of New Bern do not know what they will lose by ignoring the, matter and they, will have no one to'blame but themselves. V?ny are the other cities so eager for this school if they do not see in it big opportunity to enlarge and Im prove the town? What other town can offer the natural advantagesvfor such an Institution that New Bern of fers? In every respect there are many reasons why New Bern should be the choice for the location of he school but her citizens must work for It -and work hard. ETELIJi'S LOVE AND SACRIFICE. One of the largest gatherings of practical and experienced railroad men,1 connected with the actual cunning of trains pos sibly ever seen 'at one time in Greens boro, was witnessed here yesterday to test the working of the Wright Au tomatic Safety air brake attachment This new and really . wonderful ap pliance the invention bf Mr.'. John B. Wright of Greensboro had been tested by the Durham and Charlotte road a year ago, and has .been used by; that and the Aberdeen J& Ashe'boro road with complete success. It had been difficult to get the big roads to, take time enough to give the thing atten tion, until sometime ago. The South ern consented to giving it a test on its tracks at Greensboro, The time set was this morning at 10 o'clock. Going about a mile out of the city just beyond the coal chut a long siding was used and an engne with four box cars constituted tb3 train. The at tachment, was Just on the rear car, the engine being blocked at eaoh ex periment. The first test was.by a split switch. As the rear track wheels passed the switch going backwards, the switch was turned catching the front wheels following, Immediately, there was a sdg zag of the car track, the brake au tomatically operated, stopping the car and putting on the emergency . to every car in the train, even the pond erous wheels of the engine ceased to roll and began sliding before coming to a dead stop. The next test was for a derailment. This time a heavy cross-tie- was placed diagonally across the track. The engine pushed the cars with strong force and speed when the wheels of the rear car struck the tie, and jumped from the rails to the cross-ties, instantaneously the wheels of the engine and each of the other cars were locked by the emergency brake and there was no wreck. . To the Jarge crowd of Citizens who had been attracted by curiosity as well as interest in seeing so imppr tant an invention by a fellow citizen tested, it was simply wonderful to see a train of cars thrown off th,e track while going 20 m lelasn hour and the while going 20 miles an hour and the right and without damage, the engi neer even having nothing to do, ex cept to have his engine begin sliding the moment here was tcopble with. a single set of wheels behind or before blm. But it was the railroad men as sembled there to see if such e thing was practicable tas well as possible to whom Inventor Wright and his asso ciates who are financing the appli ance, were looking. Most pf these men cautiously -expressed . themselves ; as wel pleased with what they had seen, while some were enthusiastic, . AH-of tbem agreeb that the test had been as complete as they desired. The W yentor offering other teste, such, as running a train 60 miles , an hour to strike a removed rail, but this offer was declined , with thanks, Besides many other railroad men present out- side of the operating departments of kthe various , roads,' the' following Ex pert officers and trainmen belonging to the mechanical department of the roads' natned; .were; present :i ' Murchlson and Cornlth ot the A. By an act passed at the last session of congress the terms of the court at New Bern were extended from one ton two weeks, provided 'the business of the court so requires. There is only one case of impor tance on the civil trial calendar in the circuit court, that of J. J. Rogers against the Pacific Mutual Life Insur ance Company. The criminal trial calendar in the district court contains, ' possibly, a larger number df cases than usual, owing to the fact that a number of cases were necessarily compelled to be carried over and continued from the last term on account of lack of time In which to try. The cases present a wide range of violations. In addition to those for the. morecommon offences of Illicit distilling, 'retailing without license, and. failing to post license tax stamp. there are also cases for obstructing navigation under the river and har bor act Of 1899, damaging rural letter boxes, using mails for fraudulent pur poses, using cancelled postage stamps etc. v Argo Red Salmon readily adapts It self to the requirements of breakfast, luncheon, dinner or supper and gives seasonable variety to every meal.
