(Friday) night The contractors for tha a tree t pav ing began to' maka. preparations to start work, yeaterday. -The ofBcea and headquarters will be located on the Davea lot. Broad street, which was recently purchased by Mr. Blades. Hext Wednesday the Orchestra and Glee Club of the University. of North Carolina will give a concert in the ope ra house. The organisation has appeared here before and their enter tainments have always been very pleas The Amusea picture show did not opt n its doors last night, owing to the Orphans concert. They wish to announce that two pictures will be run off tonight, instead of one as us ual, also new song. All are interest ing. This is an age of system, and every indjstry is the better for it. Some time in the future an enterprising stranger Is going to stroll into town buy a few mules, drays, horses and transfers, open up an office and do all the hauling and carrying that is need ed, at'a nominal charge. About Ave hundred packages of peas were marketed and shipped from here Welnesday. The crop from the larger tru2k farftis have not begun moving yet, the receipt, so far being the pro duct of hct houses and gardens. The prise was a little better yesterday selling for ninety cents and a dollar : a basket. I Press Wednesday's Kinston Free tells of the horrible death of a mill hand, employee of the Rutledge Com-' pan on the Kinstom Carolina Rail-' roi.d. The man was colored, named . Eu;;ene Hunter, and was. at work on (he saw when the power was acci dentally turned on by the engineer. He was horribly mangled and died in a l.ttle while. Some improvement is noticed in the appearance of the streets, since the Woman's C'lub took up the matter, but they -are far from tidy yet. The habit of cleanliness, while easy to ac quire, is one' of education or environ ment. Let this kind of education gel abroad among the people of New Bern, and not only the streets, but the back lot .1, also would look better. The writer made a visit yesterday to the garden of Mr. Jesse Harrison, loeally famous as a successful tomato grower, and the visit was well worth the walk, too. Mr. Harrison has grow ing, quite a large patch of vegetables, which are now in bloom. His Irish potatoes, and cucumbers are also In bloom, and altogether he has, rib doubt, the finest garden in town. Another neighborhood row, from a cross the Neuae, was given an airing in Justice S. R. Street's court. The trouble arose it seems, over a land survey, resulting In Mr. Spicer Lane drawing his gun on Lelnster Mcln toxh, a neighbor. A great many un complimentary opinions of each other w re exchanged between them, but no one was injured except In feeling. Ume was bound over to court One of this section's most valuable resources Is lying unused and unap preciated. This refers to the wasted water power of the many streams that abound. Travelling over the eastern counties, many abandoned mill sites are noticed that will no doubt In the future become valuable property. The old objection In the paBt to water power waa the uncertainty and unre liability of the supply. With the adap tion of modern machinery the supply can now be economized and regulated to a nicety. As fuel becomes more scarce and expensive to develop pow er, In the same proportion will water power become more appreciated. The time li not far distant when many ot these abandoned mill streams will be harneaied again. Baxter's Ntore Open Today J. J. Baxter's new store In the Elks Temple will open for the public patron age today. Both departments, the dry foods and clothing are ready and the pub)o la invited to go and see thin fine emporlam. Mr. Baxter is about to . realise, one of bis dreama la tha occupancy of a large room for bit big stock of goods. His la an experience ot development, tha very best exam ple of a ateady growth, from small beginning. All rejolc In bis aucceaa and today , he .baa reason to be very proud of his grand achievement . Ja Preseaee 3 ' f Large Aasesbly c " Chriat Church never looked, prettier than it aid yesterday afternoon, when at six-thirty o'clock Mlaa Ajnj,;(Juldn and Mr. Thomaa P. WilllamB were united -In marriage. The decbratipna were white and green. The altar was a mass of white "roses and snow balls and lighted with numerous can dles. - The chancel was banked in palms 'pnd potted plants. The bridal party entered by the strains of Lohengrin's wedding march, played In, a charming manner by Miss Clare Morris, organ ist. The ushers were Messrs- Wade Meadows, -Edward Meadows, Edwin Richardson and Jack Street. Miss Susie Guion, -sister of the bride, was a 'beautiful maid of honor in white batiste, and carried white carnations. The bride, attired in a dark blue coat suit, entered on "the arm of her fa ther. Mr. W- R. Guion, and was met at tbe altar by the groom and his best man and brother, Mr. EllT&sJy'illtams, where they plighted their troth and wrre made man and wife by Rev. J. II. Brown, Rector of Christ church. The bried is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Guion, and has many friends. The groom is the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Williams, and Is highly esteemed by his many friends. Immediately after the ceremony, Mr. nnd Mrs. Williams left on the yacht Conner, for altaire, Straits, N. C the summer home of the family, and on their return will be at home to their friends at the residence of Mr. R. P. Williams on South Front street, Meet me at the Cane Rack at the Elks Itnznar. Guess The Doll's Name Within the next day or so a beau tiful doll will be put on exhibition at Hackburn's stores. This doll is to be given away during "the Elks' Bazaar to the person guessing the cor rect, name. Guesses will be ten cents each and all the little girls had better begin saving their pennies In order to have a guess. Guesses will be sold during the bazaar at the Ooli Booth, which will be one of the new features. The management of the bazaar wishes to state that at the bazaar two years ago, an Idea got out that no-one was supposed to attend except mem liers of the Elks and those interest ed. This is a mistake. Every one is invited to attend, and the more the merrier. 'There-will be something do ing during the entire week to inter est every one. Don't forget to take a chance for Hie klmona at the Japanese Booth. Successful Fox' Hunt The Craven Hunt Club had a pleas int and successful chase yesterday In the vicinity of John McGowan's farm, near Rlverdale. The quarry was soon started but did not seem very game as he had not gone very far before he sought the friendly pro tection of a tree. The fox was first kodaked" in his perch and them shaken down when he made a brief get away and was Anally caught by the dogs. In the party were: Messrs A. H. Rawlins, Gordon Kenna, Sylves ter Gray, John McOowan, and Dr. Glbbs. Meadamea Lumsden, Demlng, and Gray, Misses Rawllna and Elliott. Men's Down Towa Meeting The Tabernacle forces have arrang ed for a series of men's meetings to be held every day at- Amusea at 12 o'clock, noon. Tbe service will last 29 minutes by the clock.
