A great crowd gathered in Maysville yesterday to at tend the ''laud auction sale." The at traction was great, for men, women add children followed the auction wtg- oit through dirt and dust, and over burned and blackened stubble, and un der a hot sun for more than three lone hours. Music allures, it must have been the music that hell the ladies on do en ticing stroll or was it the anticipation of being the lucky one in the "free lot, gold and silver contest?" If they got either they certainly earned it. The lots sold, fifty to seventy-five of them for satisfactory prices to sati fit d purchasers. We look forward to the time, with pleasurable contemplation, when on each of these lots a nice dwelling will be erected; we can then say "our city" and not look sheepish. We did not get any of the free gold, free silver or the free lot, but we did get as much of the free music as the next one. New Bern, PollocksvlUe, Trenton, Olivers, Stella and Swansboro were represent xl Not all of us were there to buy lots, neither to try our luck at the chance game. The sweet strains of muiic, even "Dixie," could not drown the hum of the "politi- i eal bee" that nested in the bonnets of some JT our good men .h shame, that I the ladies are not admitted to this mys tic sight also We grasped the hands of all our friends that we could, but it was not a "vote for me abakt," but simply love your neighbor greeting. While wears thinking of this we are reminded that this is the year to norai oate man to represent this senatorial district in the next general amblv. and without his consent or knowledge, "I rise to nominate" Hon. HURLS rHERSELF UNDER TRAIN Engagement Broken for Third Time, Miss Dennis Kills Her . selfWith Locomotive Aid New Yew March 26. Broken-heat ted because she had had a quarrel with ber fiance and had broken off their engage ment, Katherine Dennis, pretty and nineteen, employed in tha lace mills at Patchogue, L. I., committed suicide yesterday noon there by throwing her self in front of the locomotive pulling an east-bound Amagansett and Sag Harbor train. She was struck' by the locomotive, tossed far to one side and instantly killed. Tucked in her bodice was found a noti she had written in pencil. It was not addressed. It wan as follows: "If anybody wants to know why I did this, they can ask Ollie Kemp: He is the cause of it. Goodby to all my friends and mamma, papa, sinter and brothers. Katherine Dennis, No. 2 Wav erly avenve, Patchogue, L. I." Tne Kemp referred to in the note a Louis Ollington Kemp twen'y-three, and well thought of in the community. He was much shocked. He naid that he and Miss Dennis had been engaged for two years, but they had quarrels and the engagement was twice kroken off. It was broken off a third tiire a few day ago, owing, he said, to the cause less jealousy of the young womtin. She had sent a boy to him demanding that he return all ber letters and everything belonging to her. She left the la:e mill about 11 o'clock yesterday morning and was seen a little later waiting by the railroad track. Whan the train came along she waited until it was quite close and then threw herself in front of it. ThcPeor. lies d ank NEW BERN, N. C.
