Extravaganza-land of Nod Seldom have New Bern lovers of ex travaganza a enjoyed S much a preaen tation of that character as was shown here Wednesday, in S. S. Rork's Land of Nod. The play is a whimsical one for old and young, full of the specta cular, enlivened by witticisms and kept brilliant by electrical effects, songs and an attractive caste. Scenery and cos turn es added, gave a finish that made tha Land of Nod belie its name for applause and laughter greeted the playsrs from start to finish. The conceit of tha play makes every one take to It, for there is action for every age and tempsnnent. that arouses tha sober to smiles and causes the merry to laugh outright. Swept by the Flames Early -Yesterday ?'TMornlnfr-;:.';'; . Five dwelling housea, four of which were the property of VLt.J. L.,. Habn, Bad ona belonging to Charles If idgetta which wra located in the western sec tion of tha city in a locality known as Relaanstsia Town were totally destroy ed by Are at an early hour yesterday nioTning.:.;:''- For some unknown reasou tha gong at the firs boose failed to ring and it was necessary tot Chief Richardson to go down and awake the' drivers of the hose wagons and to have the alarm rang by hand. This caused quite a delay, and by the time they bad reached the scene of the conflagration the house belonging to Chas Midgette was wrapped in flames On unloading their hose it was found that the entire length carried 4n both wagons would have to be used in get ting omi stream on the blaxe, :the near est hydrant being located quite a dist ance from the flee. - A conveyance Was dispatched to the 6th ward fire house to obtain another supply of hose. , This caused another delay and when they had at last secured the proper facilities for combatting the flames they were entirely beyond the control of the fire fighters and before it could be extinguished five dwellings were burned down. - If the fire alarm system had not been out of order and the firemen had arrived on the scene when the fire was first dis covered the loss which is estimated to be about $1,500 would have doubtless been much less.
