April 23. -Colonel Theodore Itoosevelt delivered tbe following ajB dress on "Cltlzenxhlp In a Republic" at the SorboDtie; ' Strange and Impressive associations' rue In tbe ulnd of a man front new world who speaks before this gust Doay in tus ancient lnstltutMn. of learning. Before bis eyes pass tie shadows of mighty kings and warlike nobles, of great masters of law and theology. Through (be shining dust of tbe dead centuries be aeea crowded Bgures that tell ' of tbe power and learning and Splendor Of times gone by. and be sees also the Innumerable boat of humble' students to whom clerkship meant emancipation, to whom It was well nigh the only outlet from tbe dark ihraldom of the middle nges. Today I shall speak to you on (he subject of Individual citizenship, the one subject of vital importance to yOu, my bearers, and to me aud my coun trymen, because you and we are cjtj zeus of great democratic republics. A democratic republic such as each of ours-an effort to realize In its tell seuse government by, qt and for he people represents the most gigadtlc of nil possible social experiments, the onp fraught .with greatest possibilities J alike for good and for evil. The success of republics like yours and like ours mcana the glory and our failure tbe despair of mankind, and for you and for us the question of the quality of tbe individual citizen 1-Bii-preme. I n ler almost unsur mountable difficulties, teachers and pu pils worked early and late an i triumph ed in the splendid exhibition of hat night. Tbe house was full to overflow ing anil every one present seemed high ly pleased. In the play Cabbage Hill School, which was so ably presented, all the a - tors deserve great credit, and also the young men who presented the negro nvnatrel. Annie Conner as Martha Morrison in Cabbage Hi I School was irristible, arid Pauline Bod as Mary Augusts Jones was in such good humor and bubbling over with laughter that it would have been a dull person indeed who could not have laughed with her. Will B 1yd aa Martha's granny kept us all wondering if the teacher and super visor were not really afraid that her tongue would cost them thier pUcea. Maty Conner as Poaie Smith, the cry baby did her part to perfection. The drills wera very good, showing tbat much time and careful training had bean bestowed upon them. The Topsy Turvy Drill was the moot laughable, but nothing could h'tva been more beautiful and angelic than the 8 beautiful white clad little "mothers" hi the doll drill, who rocked their dol lies to sleep and tang the sweetest lul laby imaginable, Msdie Taylor, who recited the "New Church Organ" in suitable costume was vevy amusing.
