May 19-Washington Alexander a negro, about twenty two yean of age, who", with Charles Good man, is charged with having murdered Hugh Gorner, colored, at the lumber camp of the Norfolk Lumber Company, at Wallace, Sunday morning, made his escape from Deputy Sheriff Bordeaux, bf Pender county, immediately after the arrival of the A. & Y. train here last night. The two alleged murderers made their escape Sunday, but were ar retted this morning at Parkeraburg and were being brought to Wilmington and Were to be pitted in jail at Burgaw to morrow, a i ex uider and uoodman were tied together With a " rope, and the for mer managed to get the knot untied. Garner was beaten to death with a fence rail, his face having been batter ed to a pulp. The Norfolk Lumbar Co. offered a reward of $26 for the arrest of Alexander. BLACK MOUNTAIN. Remarkable Development of This , Favorite Resorti There is no part of the mountain country that haa shown greater improve ment than the Black Mountain section. This section includes the great religious centres of Montreat and Bluemont, the Y. M. C. A. and now the probable es tablishment of a Methodist Chataugua. Toe township haa spent .$30,000 on macadm roads during the past year, radiating In five directions from the town. One road goes to Montreat with its two big hotel and hundreds of cot tages. Among the proposed great mountain highways for automobiles, such as the one from Charlotte to Knoxville, is one proposed to be built from Asheville to the Blowing Rock country, passing through Black Mountain. A trolley line haa already been surved from Ashe ville to Black Mountain. , The Inn at Black Mountain will be opened in June by Mrs. W D Sprague, who has always been identified with the town. Only two days remain of for tril cases on the docket can be disposed of and today and tomorrow will doubtless be two very busy days. The following other cases were die posed of yesterday. One of the largest strawberries ever seen here was shown the writer by Hor ace Duncan, a colored farmer, who re sides a few miles f rom the city. The berries were very large, and one of them measured 41 inches in ciroum f renee and 2g inches in length. Duncan stated that be bad found other berries in nis garden that were larger than the one he exhibited, but that they were not in a state of perfect preservation.
