C. June 8 Facing an other railroad conference today. Presi dent Taf t davoted himself to starving the Eastern rata situation, hoping to obtain an agreement from the Eastern roads similar to that reached with the Western lines Uat night. It is confidently expected by the ad ministration that there will be little I difficulty in p5r8u4ii8fj tic roprcsoQ - lives of the Eastern tine to agree. Today' conference will be of greater scope than that of yesterday, for on its result will depend definitely the attitude of the great eastern trunk lines, and probatd; all of the others lines in the country. Yesterday's agreement cover ed only the twenty five roads in the Western Traffic Association. President Brown, of the New York Central, and President McCrea, of the Pennsylvania, are two of the eastarn committee, who arranged today's White House conference. Brown has already announced that he favors an agreement similar to that reached by the Western road. President Underwood, of the Erie, who was expected, also declared in favor of such as settlement. I To the Eastern roads, however, the government has nothing to offer in re turn. The department of justice has neither enjoined the proposed rate in crease nor filed suit under the Sherman anti-trust, law. A threat of prosecut ion is the only club in the hands of pres ident in the Eastern situation. Banner "Sure SeaJ" Fruit Jars (with glass top.) M. E. Whitehurst & Co. To Hold Memorial Exercises . Each yar as this season rolls around this beautiful and impressive ceremony is solemnized and it is indeed a beauti ful custom. It was thought at first that Hon. Geo. E. Hood, of Ooldaboro, would be on hand to deliver the address for the occasion but a letter received from him yesterday states that he will not be able to attend. This necessitates the com mittee of arrangements securing anoth er orator to delived the address and up to the present time no steps have been taken by them in during this. However one will be secured in due time. Wonder Freezers Best Made M. E. Whitehurst & Co. . S Mr. W. W. Clark Passes Away The sad news was received in this ci ty yesterday morning that Mr. W W Cbuk, one of New Bern's most promt nent attorneys, who has been in bad health for the past few months and on account of which he hr.d been sojourn ing at Asheville in the hope of recuper ating, had passed away at 2.30 am. Mr. Clark was well known through out the State as a lawyer of ability having practiced his profession in all of the State courts. j& , - He possessed a gentle, amiable dispo sition, a sweet, Christ-like spirit, a kind tender heart, and unbounded gen erosity, a romantic gallantry, a chival ric courage, and every noble and gen erous virtue that can adorn and embel lish human character. His pure thoughts were borne Liae fumes of sacred incense o'er the clouds And wafted thence on angels' wings through ways Of light to the bright source of all. " He came as near being an ideal g n- tleman as any man who ever lived, courtly in his manners, with all the cul ture of the schools, polished with the refining influence of the most VftjMSjfc society, possessing in an eminent degree the glowing characteristics and shining virtues of a true knight of the age of chivalry, which were real and substan tial virtues, such as courtesy to the low, respect to the high, tenderness to the softer sex, loyalty to the prince, cour age and piety, gentleness and modesty, Veracity and frankness. There are man ly virtual though Byron says, "Cerven tea smiled Spain's chivalry 'away." The remains wi I arrive fat this city from Goldaboro this morning and the funeral exercises will ' be conducted from the Pint Baptist church by Rev. Chas. L. Cieaves this afternoon at 4 o'clock. .Mr. Clark is survived by his fathsr, two brothers and four sisters. Special Sale.
