r If You Want to Borrow
we invite you to call and see us. We will consider
vow application carefully and promptly, and if we
can consistently do so we will be glad to make the
loan.
Of course a carefully managed bank, must not
make any but safe loans, but when we regard a bor
rower as deserving of a loan we are quite as happy
to serve him as a good depositor.
It takes good borrowers as well as good deposit
ors to make a live bank.

Several weeks ago whilo the John R.
Smith Carnival Company were exhibit
ing at Kinston, a young man who gave
his name as John Hopgood of Newark,
N. J. applied to the manager of the
show for a position as helper around
the grounds. He secured the position
and rtsyed with the company for seven
or eight days.
After leaving Kinston the carnival
went to Snow Hill, N. C, and at this
.place the young man quit the show and
left the town.
Last Sunday the carnivsl arrived in
this city and on Monday the young man
attain applied to the manager for a posi
tion, wrwwwwnw
that there was no vacancy and that they
could not use him.
1 The young man did not take this re
fusal.as final and during the past few
days has visited the grounds several
times ia search of work which, however
he was not successful in securing.
Last Wednesday night the young rasn

in the northern part of the city. He
was carried into a nearby house where
he was partially revived and stated that
he had suffered an attack of vertigo.
After makiug this statement he sgain

become rational until morning. Capt.
Stern, the local manager of the Ameri

Falls Overboard From (las
Boat Brevard
Wednesday night as the gas boat
Fannie Brevard, Captain Noah Lee,
master, was returning from a trip to
thin port, ayoung man. named Joseph
9spkbam, who worked on the boat fell
overboard and was drowned.
A cargo of potatoes had been brought
from tWw1fctf"S Creek had been
discharged and the boat was ret Jrning
when near the mouth of Goose Creek a
wild Bcresm for help was heard and Joe
ingraharo has not been seen since.
The bo?.t was stopped immediately
but the night being very dark and the
wind blowing briskly it was impossible
to locate the drowning man, and oven
yesterday there was a good deal of un
certainly about just where the accident
ocenrred.
Captain Lee hastened on down to
Wilkinson's Point where the Revenue
Cutter was lying borrowed a lot of tackle
and returned yesterday to drag for the
body but about the middle of the after
noon a report reached here that the
search had so for been unsuccessful.
Mr. Inpraham was a native of Beau
fort county where his mother still
lives, but he has been residing in the
neighborhood of Arapahoe several
months. It is said that he was a young
man of most excellent character, in
dustrious steady and very pious, all of
which made him many friendu whore
he was known.
Another pathetic side to this unfort
unate drowning is the fact that 1 he young
man was to be married next week to a
worthy young lady of near Arapahoe.
No theory can be advanced as to
what caused the accident, mil . in pas
sing from one part of the boat to the
another in the darkness, the yoiinj,' man
stumbled and fell overboart.

Due to the fact that the carnival at

people present Capt. and Mrs. Oscar
Stern who have charge of the local

and asks that the public let him have
all their cast-off clothes, shoes, books,
