June 13 -The heavy short interest in the cotton market that ac cumulated over the government report was used as a lever this week by the boll interests to advance prices to a still higher level. This operation was great ly assisted by the strong statistical position of the remainder of the old crop. Domestic spinners have been mod erate buyers, I hey are persistent in the policy of curtailment owing to the very unsatisfactory state of general trade which lately has been accentuated by the drastic policy of the administration in enjoining the railroads from raising rater.1 While the issue has been in a measure adjusted there is still a feel ing of uncertainty over the immediate outlook which deters merchants from making normal new commitments for the future. Business conditions abroad are much more satisfactory than at home. For eign spinners have been good buyers of spot cotton, as reflected in the heavy sales at Liverpool during the past week They had been awaiting a decline after our government report which failed of materialization and they have ber n tak ing their supplies since then, at prevail ing prices. Weather conditions in the cotton belt since the issuance of the government reports have been very favorable for the germination and growth of the new crop and the promise of good yield continues excellent. The state reports of Oklahoma and Texas are exception ally, goad both as to condition and acre age, the figures showing a greater in crease and higher condition than those reported by the government, Cotton is forming squares in SouthernTexas and other parts of the belt where the weath er has. been unusually good and some new cotton should be coming to market from these section within two months. At 12 o'clock yesterday a large num ber of voters of Craven county, met in mass meeting at the court house and endorsed Hon. Charles R. Thomas for renomination for Congress from the 3d Congressional District. The meeting was called to order by Mr. R. A. Nunn. and he called upon Hon. Jas. Brvan to preside. Mr. Bry an addressed the meeting in a rattling good speech. The main point made by Mr. Bryan was that the interests of all Eastern Carolina demanded that Mr. Thomas be returned to Congress, and that his constituents had the right to call for his nomination. It was merely a question of the interests of this sec tion and no one else could do what he could do for deep waterways and all the great needs at this critical period. There was great applause for the tel ling points of Mr. Bryan's remarks. The number of people present was re markable and the following resolutions were unanimously passed. New Bern, N. C June 13, 1910. We, the citizens of Craven county, in mass meeting assembled, hereby en dorse our fellow countyman, Hon. Chas. R. Thomas, for Congress, and respect fully call to attention his untiring ser vices as Congressman for the past ton years. We believe that it is for the best interest of this district to re-elect Mr. Thomas, and know of no good rea son why he should not be returned to Congress. While Mr. Thomas is not a candidate for the position we believe that we have the right to acknowledge our gratitude to him for his valuable services already rendered and to ox press our desire to see him retained in the position in which he has accomp lished so much for his people. ,1 ' - gj ai , n i BERN.
