June 24 -Bradstreet's Saturday will say for Richmond and vi cinity :- Weather conditions have favoreJcrop growing this week, giving a stimulus to trade in practically all lines. Manu facturers and dealers in agricultural fertilisers report good sales, and im proved collections, their sales have shown an increase over previous years, manu - tacturers of trunkp, bags aid l ather goods report active ordering. The a bow hat and cap trade is in good condition and satisfactory orders are being re ceived for future shipment. Manufactur ers of extracts, vinegar, pickles asd similar commodities report good sales. The cotton crops reported from three. weeks to one month later, but With favorable weather a full crop is pre dicted. Tobacco is in good condition. Wheat is being harvested throughout the district.and a good average yield is report. Retail trade is quiet in most lines, and collections are only fair Who is He? During the past few nights a number of calls have been receivtd at Police Headquarters from different sect ions of the city asking that an officer be sent out to arrest a man who was in that particular section and who was acting as though he was either drunk or crazy In each case an officer has been sent to the scene but each time has been ou - witted by the person who caused the alarm. He,- as soon as the officer heaves in sight, becomes as orderly as possible and walks off. New York, June 24 The cotton mar ket was quiet today, and recovered part of yesterday's decline on short covering, Attention is centered on the condi tions in Texas and Oklahoma, where the weather continues hot and dry. No alarm is felt over this as yet as that section could stand twj weeks more of the dry spell without serious conse quences, but until rains occur there, the market is expected to remain firm. Heavy Thunder Storm Visits The City Shortly after six o'clock yesterday afternoon another heavy rain and than der storm, very similar to the one which prevailed for several hours a few days ago, visited this city. For more than an hour the rain fell in torrents while vivid flashes of lightning, accompanied by heavy thunder played across the elements. So far as is known no seri ous damage was done by the storm. Charles Thomas in Congress is recognized the time draws near for choosing successor. Mr. Thomas announced sometime ago that he was not a candidate for're-nom ination. The voters of the" District have the right to nominate him.' It is no reflection upon any- candidate to say that Mr. Thomas is in the posi tion to give us better service than any other man in this District. Heretofore he has sought the nomin ation. This time the people of the Dis trict seek him. If you favor keeping him in Congress go to your precinct primary meeting, this Saturday, 26th June, 1910, and nominate and vote for him and send as delegates to your County Convention men who favor his re-election. Trial Before Magistrate Street. At 11.30 o clock yesterday morning the trial of Rev. A. C. Schuler, who was summoned to appear before J ustice of the peace S. R. Street and prove the statements he made last Sunday 'from his pulpit in regards to the blindtigers in this city and the duplicity of some of the police force. There was very little evidence introduced by the defense and the evidence that was introduced was not explicit enough to be satisfac tory. The Justice finally decided that there was nothing in the case and it was dismissed. Bl-Centennial Hard at Work The committee who have charge of the arrangements for the Bi-Centdnnial which is to be held in this city next month are now hard at work perfecting their plans, Mr. R. D. W. Connor, of Raleigh, is in charge of the work and he is conducting his campaign in an en tirely efficient manner. In the police court yesterday afternoon Sawyer was given a heariteT on a warrant charging him with an assault with a deadly weapon while Reeves was triad for a simple affray. R Roberson passed into eternity. Mr. Roberson was one of the most unique characters in this section and had lived to a venerable age, 84 yeare He was known to everybody, and well liked by all . Ho was what is, or uped to be known, as a Thotusonisn doctor, was well acquainted with the virtues of all kinds of roots and herbs, which he used tor fifty years in a practice cov ering five or six of the eastern counties. Even in his old age people came from long distances to consult and buy medi cine of him. lie was a veteran in the Confederate army and carried various tears on his body, testimonials of- his bravery on the field of battle. The old gentleman attended the Veteran's dinner hem a few weeks ago. declaring when he left, that it had been one of the happiest days of his life. In his private life Mr. Roberson was a congenial companion, an accommoda ting, kind hearted neighbor; an upright man in bis dealings with his fellow creatures. In his old age he visited around among his friends in the differ ent counties a good deal and there wr always a hearty, welcome awaiting him at whatever home he chose to stop. He was very entertaining in conversation, beinv a close observer of things all his life and having a most wonderful mem ory, which remained clear until the end Dr. RaWaoa was a native of Onslow county, went to Jones county 60 years aso and married Betsy Hancock and settled on a farm in the Beaver Creek section, where several years ago hi wife preceded him to the grave.
