The ring was tested and found to be all O. K and worth several hundred dollars. Several hours after this the strsnger returned to get the money or his ring. He was asked to take a seat and the gentleman Who was to make the loan told him that he bad only $50 on hand at the time and that he would advance this amount. This d-d not suit the stranger and securing the ring from the desk on wbieh it had been lying, started for the door however, just before reaching the door he turned around and informed the ptopective londer that he would accept his proposition and handed him the ring. The transaction was made and the stranger took his departure. The gentleman who had made the loan.de cided that he might as well wear the ring and this was according done. Several days after he first began to wear the ripg he was startled to find that allot the gold was wearing off and that the "sparkler" did not sparkle any more, and after a visit to the a jeweler he discovered that the ring he had f ur chased was not the ringhe had first had tested. Of these only twenty have failed to stay. Those who have gone to the farms have been writing to their friends abroad or to their friends employed in the cities, and the result is a gradually growing tendency to go to the land. The Judicial- Convention ' met a 2 'clock with Mr. AD, Ward as Chair- man and O; G- Dunn as Secretary. The relief conntietf brought out. only two candidate. Judge D.- L. Ward of New Bern and H. W. Whedbee of Pitt coun ty were pai- in nominatios by D. E. Henderson and F. G. Jones respective ly. The call of the counties resulted aq follows. Carteret, Ward 11,50 Whedbee, 11.60, Craven, Ward 19.77 Whedbee 10.23, Greene, Ward 18. Jones, Ward 74, Whedbee 5.26, Pamlico Ward 11.05 Whedbee 1.95. Pitt. Whedbee 50-total. Ward 68.06 Whedbee 78 94. The nomi nation was ' then made unanimous Mr. S. M. Brinson, Mr.; Frizzelle and Mr. Cabo seconded the nomination of Judge Ward, and Mr. T. D. Warren of Craven that of Mr. Whedbee. The nomination of C. L. Abernethy of Carteret county was made unanim ously for Solicitor. There was a large attendance at the conventions and a good deal of.interest and the results were fully discussed on tho hotel piazzas by both ins and outs'.
