Delegations from all near by Tribes to the extent of about Ave hundred members were present in full Indian costume, presenting a most interesting, instructing and spectacular appearance. It was particularly fitting rthaf the Improved Order of Red Men, the oldest and largest fraternal organisation of purely American origin and teachings Bhould have taken such a prominent part in the exercises. The Improved Order of Red Men is practically a- new organization in the South, the Great Councif of North Carolina being but ; twelve years old, yet during thia .time i it has experienced a phenomenal growth, now numbering eighty or . more Tribes with a membership of over five thou sand. This gain has been made with out any special effort by the organisa tion, which shows conclusively thut the Order has merit ,. A personal encounter between two of Oriental's citizens occurred at that place late Saturday night, and as a re sult Mr. Joe Caroon, a prominent mer chant there was struck on the held by a piece of scantling which was wielded by Paul Ward, a young white boy of that place who bears a very unsavory reputation and was completely para lyzed for more than seven hours. The affair culminated from a joke which Mr Caroon played upon Mr Ward in regards to a witness fee, Ward was placed under arrest, but later gave bond and was released from cus tody.
