Aug.; 10, 1910 INFLICTION OF PEKSQNAL CLEANLINESS UPON GROWN-UPS. Every man can remember the particular horror of his childhood, that of having to keep clean Childhood is the special period of life that the hunian being seeks to be of the earth, earthy. The Sat urday night tub has been to boy hood, the terror of terrors, and the extra tub punishment daring the week, but added to the misery I that water and plenty of soapsuds freely and . generously . applied, could afflict the average boy. However great the tub misery, like other things' iu the boyhood curriculum, it was a necessary parental service, and with most men, it has stuck, tha habit of cleanliness. But there is a town in Illinois, Aurora by name, where there ap pears to be a lack of this cleanli ness habit, where . the authorities have to take hold, not like the good mother with the dirty boy, but with the authority of the municipality, to force upon grown ups, the weekly bath habit. The report says that Aurora residents, especially foreigners, are ordered, in a list of rules just issued by the Board of Health and signed by the Mayor and Chief of Police, to take a bath once a week or be arrested. Copies of the order are to be placed in all of the boarding houses and homes of foreigners in Aurora. The rule fixing the number of baths thajb a man shall take is only one of fifteen issued by the board.. Wo men are told to scrub their floors once a week, swoep all carpets, air bedrooms and keep yards clean or be arrested. One . rule says that but two shall be allowed to sleep in a bed. It will be noted that the Aurora edict goes beyond the bathing de mand, but where a community has women who demand disciplining, it is no surprise that the men fall short The limitation to two in a bed is not a bad iule, though conditions may often demand that it be in jringed upon.
