Dr. Haw- ley Harvey Crjppen,'after a trial ex tending over five dsys, and thirty min utes deliberation by the jury, waa on Saturday found guilty of the murder of his wife, an American' woman, known on the atage ei' Belle ' Elmore. Lord Chief Justice Al vers tone who presided at the trial, sentenced Crippen to be hanged oo Novf4Bth.'' "iv-', ' ' There ia however, the strongest prej udice in England against executing a man purely on circumsUncial evidence. and an incident at the close of Crip pen's trial baa, caused the impression that the jury may have recommended aflife aentenced. After Crippen waa sentenced to death, the foreman of the jury handed to the Lord Chief Justice a note, after lookidg at which, the Jus tice said; "That shall be forwarded to the proper quarter." "The proper quarter," might mean the Home Secretary, who has jurisdic tion In such matters.' The jury re; fused to discuss the incident. A crowd saw departure of Crippen from New Bailey. Addressing the condemned man Lord Alvers tone said You have been convicted on evi dence which can leave no doubt in the mind of any reasonable man that you cruelly murdered your wife, and then mutilated her body. I implore you to make your peace with Almighty God," As the Lord Chief Justice concluded a policeman stepped forward and in the hush that had fallen over the eourt led Crippen from the dock. Board of Trustees of Postal Savings , Hank System Selects Cities to 1 Try Out New Service Washington, Oct 24 The board of trustees of- the postal, savings bank system Saturday approved at hist of 42 eeftl class post offices, -at which the plani will be given its first trial. The list includes one office for each State and territory. The trustees are Postmaster General Hitchcock, Secretary of the Treasury MacVeagh : and Attorney General W ickersham. M, Hart who conducts a cotton broker's office near the cotton exchange discovered that two bales of cotton which had been brought in yes terday were on fire. He at once ran up to the engine house to give the alarm but at that time none of the driven could be located and" considerable time was lost before the alarm was turned in. Both companies, however soon ar rived and the blaze was extinguished.
