E L Mattocks, J M Hollowell, John Suter, Jr. During the day this body ws kept busy examining witnesses and a num ber of true bills were returned. The first ease called was that of the U. S. va Oscar White, who was char, ged with retailing. The jury returned a verdict of guilty but no sentence has yet been passed. In the case of L A Randolph, of Pitt county, who was charged with using the mails for fraudulent purposes, a special verdict was ordered by the court. The case of the U. S. vs Frank Sut ton, who was charged with operating an illicit distillery was next called. The giving of testimony in this case and the arguments of the counsel consumed much time and it was late in the after noon before the jury were given the case. At a late hour last night no verdict had been rendered by the jury. Called J adije A. B. Anderson a Jackass and Crook Accor ; ding to Report Indianapolis, lnd., Oct 25th. That Thebdore Roosevelt denounced the de cision of Judge A. B. Anderson in the Pantma libel suit in Indianapolis as that of a jackass and a crook" is. a story told, under cover by members of the ex elusive Columbia club in this city. The statement of Mr. Roosevelt was said to have been made in the hearing of sev era! of the club members when Roose velt was In Indiana recently cembaign ingfor Senator Albert J. Beveridge,' and. it . bai aroused a feeling of the deepest resentment here. Tbe alleged denunciation of Judge Albert B. Anderson as a "jackass and crook" by Colonel Theodore Roosevelt on a recent visit to Indianapolis is still the most important gossip ot local, po litical and club circles. Inasmuch as the statement accredi ted to Mr, Roosevelt wsa made while the latter was a guest at the Columbia club, the club officials are loath to talk the matter outside the clubrooma. Butler and Talaon In Debate Last Night The court house was packed to its utmost capacity last night to hear the debate between Hon. George E. Butler and Hon. John M. Faison, the Repub lican and Democratic Congressional nominees froaijthis district Mr. Faison spoke first, and Judging from the f re eaent yipianse, he made, quite an fan' pression with bis audience. Mr, But- er followed with a speech which lasted one hour, in which he set fortb , clearly the principles of the Republican party. Frequent outburst of applause by the Butler adherents was also heard.
