:'As the season ' is.n6w , approaching
when all the children desire to go bare'

years we attached little importance to

We now know ground itch Is the initial
aympton of hookworm disease and that
it would not develop unless the soil bad
been polluted by sufferers from the die
ease. ., The myriads -of "eggs .pausing
daily alorig with the excreta from their
bodies develop.. Into tiny,, microscopic
worms too small lo be seen, These,
when allowed to coma in contract with
the skin, burrow through producing an
attack of ground-Itch. .The- truth of
this ssicrtioa can ha cattily proved by
making a poultice of polluted soil and
applying it tor a few. hours to some part
of the body. Always it the alte of such

Heldj. Rrgular : Mon thly Meeting
.Testefday Eitt Little Businessi'..
: Transacted!
The Board of Commiesioners xt Cra
ven county met at the court house yes-1
terday morning and remained in session
alt during the day. Despite" the fact,
however Jthere was but little busincBB
transacted,.' ' f "
,' OneTof the most important subjects
brought before the board was that in
regard to the Central 'Highway.-. At
the last meeting ef the board the chair
man was ordered to purchasers mules
which were 'to be used in the road
work, ofeaterday he informed the board
that be had received several bids from
local dealers In mules and horses since
that'time and that Mr. J, A. Jones had
made the cheapest bid: offering to boy
the mules and sell them to the county
at cost plus his .expenses to the north
era markets and that., he r would sell
them on time. The board adjourned to
Mr, Jones' stables where after they
bad looked the animals . over they de
cided'to purchase them for $350 each.
The board also decided to purchase two
wagons to' be used in this work.
Convicts will be used in building this
highway and as they will move from
place to place it is impossible for them
To have a stationary camp. In view of
this fact the board decided to p'urchase
several tents to be used by them 'while
this work is in. progress.
Among the bills presented to the
board was om for $3 for cleaning up the
office of the sheriff, Clerk of thecort
and the register or deeds. Tlria bill
caused considerable discussion as there
Is a janitor employed at the building for
the purpose of keeping it clean, it was
turned down. .
The following assist assessors were
named by the board: C. tC. Hancock,
Walter Duffy, E. E, Harper, Geo. D.
