The dosing graduating exercises of die New Bern City Schools were wit nessed by an audience that filled Grif fin Auditorium. : There was everything to gladden parent aad pupil, friends of the school and most of all the nine graduates, who were given an, ovation after being presented with their diplo mas, and nearly smothered in flowers sent-ny relatives and friends. The pro gram was one that did full credit to teacher and pupil, and each number whether essay or music offering, met with liberal applause. The chief interest centered in the prizes, which were" to be awarded, the winners being unknown in advance. Judge 0. H. Guion had the pleasurable duty of presenting the medalH, two given by Mrs. J. A. Meadows, for the High School pupil standing best in Eng lish, which was awarded Blanche Gas- kill, and for best record in tent,h grade Mathematics, awarded John Haywood Jones. The first year Latin medal. given by Mr. T. A. Green was awarded Nell Bishop. In addition to above, the N. C. chap ter Daughters of the Revolution, through its local regent, Mrs. C. S. Hollister, offered a medal for the best essay on Colonial New Bern. A num ber of contestants made such splendid efforts.it being ftard to decide upon the best eaaaj so that two medals . were awarded, to Mary Armstrong and Lula DiBosway, Judge Guion was most happy in bis presentation of the medals, ad ding much to the winners success by his praises fjor their efforts. He also very gracefully complimented the work of the faculty and teachers of the school for their signal success during the past year. To Dr. J. H. N, Summerell fell tbe charming duty of awarding the prizes, a five dollar gold piece offered by the local W. C. T. U. society for the best written article on evil effects of alcohol, the prize going to Eula Cole, In the music department, two prizes were of fered violin pupils, C. S. Hollister, Jr, and Hazel Pryor securing the hand Bome copies of Beethoven. Two prizes to piano pupils, handsome volumes of classical music were awarded Delpbine Spencer and Pearl Waters. Dr. Sum merell was most felicitous in his re marks, producing considerable merri ment. - Supt H. B. Craven, presented Mary A. Berry, Lynda L. Brown, Lavina A. Folsom, Elizabeth S. Hyman, Marjorie H. Rea, Li la E. Taylor, William B. Flanner Jr. William Hollister and John Haywood Jones to President Of the Board School Trustees, T. A. Green, as the graduates who were to re ceive diplomas. Mr. Green in his presentation speech, referred to the great progress made by tbe New Bern schools, the notabla addition of buildings and equipment, made- them equal of any in this Stat. He was en thuslasMe in bis praise of the general school advancement, giving credit for this to the untiring efforts and fine business conduct of the schools by Supt Cravsn. The diplomas were presented the graduates with words of commen dation and advice. Superintendent Craven announce! that Hiss Mary Berry was Valedictarl- S8, with S standing of 89 for the three years. He further said that three scholarships wars given annually to the three young man standing highest, snd awarded to Jobo Hay wool Jones, the scholarship in the University of North Carolina." Win.-Hollister, scholarship in Trinity College, W. B, Planner, Jr., scholarship in A, M. A. College, .
