Coplon & Son SELLS IT FOR LESS LITTLE OUT OF THE WAY, BUT IT PAYS TO WALK. TO COPLON'S THE EXPLDSIQEI ifeoBiiiuiif I: Are The Plates Aud VSopports HsTans, July 20th. With (ha berth deck of the demolished battleship Maine partly uncovered.: workmen have start ed on a systematic search for the skel etons of the remaining dead of the crew whose bodies have reposed in the hulk since the night' the . battleship .was blown up. j V i . . . The work of recoveriug the skeletons wiU be difficult as the mud and marine growth is so thick and heavy it will not yield to hydraulics, but will have to be dug but with pick, ehovel and rake, , The scene of wreckage revealed, now that the water has been pumped to the 18-foot level, is appalling. The entire structure from "frame eighteen" for ward is a- twisted mass of shattered steel It is known that the offi rials at work on the wreck believe now it 'will be aa easy mat ter to prove that the initial ex plosion was an outside one. The frames which supported the deck plating and planking forward are bent upward, and what is believed to have been the flat keel of the Maine is curved, plainly, ii is understood, from the effect of an outBide explosion. The engineers in charge of the work started the hying ot 'th foundations for ths cranes and derricks which are to be used to remove the heavy , por tions of the wreckage. They are also inspecting the central bulkheads. If the latter are intact they will be closed and the after part, of the wreck will be floated and towed out bf the harbor. The cofferdam is holding tight. The stone dumped to strengthen the leaky portions has strengthened the structure so there is now no apparent' danger of it' collapsing. The work of getting out of the mud, which now enshrouds the entire wreckage, will prove most diffi cult and more costly than was at first anticipated. Jttly 20. -The health of ficers not only of New York, but of the whole country Inay be asked to help repel tbe threatened invasion of Asia tic cholera. The discovery of five "Cholera carriers"! among the 400 im migrants undergoing bacteriological examination at Quarantine emphasized what Health Offiser Doty has said about the difficulty of confining the disease to the quarantine hospitals of ports of entry. Pr. Doty is conferring with Surgeon- General Wyman, head of the United States marine hospital service to plan how the country may be protected against "carriers" who harbor' the germs, while themselves free from their ill effects. A system of general observation ia contemplated, so that even after the 'carrier" is released from quarantime the health authorities of the place where he settles may watch for possi hie transmission of the disease. The case of these cholera carriers presents a puzzle. As yet the health authorities have not decided how soon it will be safe to permit them to be at large. Only the careful system cf bacteriological ex amination, put into effect here when cholera appeared could, it is said, have detee'ed the presence of cholera germs in thuse apparently healthy persons. The following; bulletin relating to the cholera situation was given' out at Quarantine at 9 a. m. "At Hoffman Island early '.his morn ing Domenico Rancitell, aged 68 years, one of the steerage passengers of the steamer Moltke, was taken with symp toms suspicious of cholera. At the Swin burne Island Hospital no further deaUis have occurred. On board the Anchor Line steamer Perugia chnditions are satisfactory. London, July 20. According to fig ures received in this city the deaths from the plague io India have reached the enormous total of 650,690 for the half year ended oo June 30. The disease has taken such a hold on that couotry that its ravages are little heard of except through the occasional official statistics. The British India office in recent re ports stated that the epidemic war par ticularly virulent this year and that the moat persistent efforts to stamp it out failed , to effect a permanent im provement In the situation.
