Jenkins, of No a f Township r who warn. vleeUd constable at the last -election held in November, appeared before the Board and. presented hi official bond. The attorney passed 60 the bond as to its legal efficiency and surety and the Board Ordered that it fee accpted and was ordered recorded and filed and Mr. Jenkins was inducted into the offie of constable. . - . A bid for $4.00 was presented to the Board for the burial of a pauper. At the last legislature a bill was passed prohibiting any eounry to pay the bori al expense of any pauper who wa not an inmate of the, county home, a Con- -federate soldier or the widow of a C on federate soldier and that such bodies be given over to the Btate Board of Ana tomy. When this law was brought be fore the Board several of the' members and the attorney were in favor of pay ing the bill regardless,, but ..the penalty attached to the law caused them to re consider the matter. The presenter of the bill finally , agreed to hold it over until the next meeting in order that the Board would have further time to in ventilate. . . if Several citizens from different sec tions of the county appeared before ti e Board and reported that bridge in their districts were in bad order. The Board ordered that these bridges be repaired as early as practicable. Meiers Asa Jones and EL K.Bryan were appointed cotton weighers for the 8th, Township. Mr. G: B. Waters presented a bond of $50 and was re-appointed game war den for this county. County Attorney Green made one suggestion that if put into effect would save the county several thousand dol, lars each year. He said that he was in favor of abolishiog, the method the Boand 00 had of allowing a large num ber of paupers ascertain' amount of money each month. That if these peo ple were not able, to take care of them selves or had no relative to ears for them, they should be placed in the oounty home where they would be look ed after and provided for. He slated further that if th Board rendered such a decision that there would b a num ter of them who would neither u to the count v home or eall on them for money but that they had relatives who rather than see them carried to county home would assist in supporting them. Thifc suggestion, however wss not act ed upon at this meeting but will doubt less be takeo up in one of the future meetings, Mr. Wm. Dupn appeared before the Board and asked that the property of L. M. Blakely be stricken from the tax list. ThUrwas ordered don after the payment of all cost had been made. ' A letter was ordered written to Mr. EL T. La"tnbr President and general manager of the Norfolk-Smthern Rail way Company telling him of th bad condition of a number of' bridges along that company' road in this county and asking him to hat them repaired as early as possible in-order that they would not b a menace to the public. Negligence of Atlantic Coast Line E. E. Co. Causes Mr. J. W.. Stewart to be Injured. A large bolt Used in fastening rails together and which had been carelessly left ptotroding from the Atlantic Coast Lin Railway Qpm party's trucks near End Street came neir causing Mr. J. W Stewart to receive serious if not fa tal injuries yesterday morning. .Early in the day Mr. Stewart had one of his horses hitched to a buggy and started out to the western part of the city to attend to some business mat ters. While driving along the Atlantic Coast Line tracks near End street, the rear wheel of his buggy caught over a large spike which had been carelessly left protruding several inches from the track, and the wheel was pulled entire ty off the axle and demolished The ac cident occurred so quickly that Mr. Stewart did not have tima to realize what had happened before he was thrown from the vehicle and landed up on one of the heavy rails upon his fore head and received a number of cuts on his forehead and also other minor inju ries on different parts of his body. The animal did not immediately stop and it was several minutes before Mr. Stewart, who had been dszfd by the contact with the rail had sufficienly re covered to go after the animal and his damaged buggy. However, he suc ceeded in stopping the horse before .the buggy was further damaged. When seen at his office yesterday af ternoon Mr Stewart stated to a Jour al reporter that he was fe?liog the ef fects of his accident, but that he was glad to have escaped with as few inju ries as he had received. The Atlantic Coast Line Railway Co. do not seem to take the least interest in the condition of their tracks within the city limits of New Bern, and sooner or later some negligence of thtir's will cause some innocent person t lose his life.
